Volume Envelopes in Sonar HS 4 vs CW9

I just bought and installed SONAR HS 4. I've been using Cakewalk 9. With it, I was able to use a volume envelope to change volume in a track, but then set the slider on the console to increase or decrease the overall track volume while the volume envelope still does it's job.

But this is apparently little different in SONAR. I disabled the automation playback option which seemed to make it behave like CW9 but now I'm not so sure. If I touch the volume envelope on the track, the slider is set to that volume level. Even when the volume envelope shape pushes the volume up, these is no change in volume. If I move the slider up to an appropriate level, the envelope is ignored.

To put it in context, I have an audience reaction track that I want to turn up at the end of the song. The envelope tool is perfect for gradually bringing in the audience track and worked well in CW9. In SONAR they seem to be fighting each other. Is there was to get it to work like CW9 or do I have to rethink how I accomplish what I want to do?
