Hey guys... I recently got one of those voltage/current/ohms testers. I want to test all of my power outlets to see if I have good power or bad power. To see if its all in phase and all that.
I really dont know where to start on this tester its got so many settings on the front. Does anyone know what I need to test for in my studio? I think phase? and some kind of test to tell me if its clean or dirty power?
Someone??? Anyone??? Discuss...

I nominate that C7sus get's his own Electrics and Power forum :):)

we sure need one.

hey what am I saying - I can offer you one at my forum site craig ;);)

cheers

AC Volts should = 110-120 (+-3V)
usually denoted VAC

Check the frequency of your power ---> 60Hz (+-1Hz)
usually denoted Hz or Freq

Once all your initial tests are done load down your outlet(s) (plug in your stuff and turn on) and ensure the voltage doesnt drop more that a volt or so. This ensures your internal wiring can support the current draw. Too much current on a wire (assuming the breaker is rated higher and doesnt blow) can cause fires

Try not to run all your equipment off the same receptacle (this can cause fires too). Try to use as many different receptacles as possible

Finally I agree that you should purchase a UPS/Conditioner I just bought 1 for my server for $100 not bad considering my synth/keyboard costed $2.2K. No matter what the power company considers 'clean' it can always be improved. Well regulated power will not only make your processor based equipment (which is EVERYTHING these days) last longer but it will also reduce any 60Hz you may have by removing the noise from your line.

Most of the stuff I mentioned is worst case scenario but knowledge is power :)

Ah also BTW voltage does have a 'phase' however the only time that phase matters is in industrial applications where 3 phase voltage is used.... havent come across any 3 phase studio equipment yet :)
