Blick-um, blick-um...
Hey crew- please help me choose:

For Voiceover:

Shure KSM44
AT 3060
Peluso 22 251

I need to do a quick read for a video that's airing Thurs. eve (Final Cut Pro project). Normally I would just use an RE20, but it wasn't available. Which of the above mics do you think would be best for voiceovers. I have an upper baritone speaking voice if that helps.

I also have the possibility of using:

AT2500 (dual element)
Sennheiser MD-441
Studio Project C-1
Peluso CEMC6
SM57, 58 :o

Much thanks, Rez

Here's a revolutionary thought for ya ... try using the one that sounds best.
.

I recently did a VO using the Shure LDC.....it was a soft-spoken, internal monologue sort of pride of investment commercial TV spot...sounded good, but I don't have a copy to use as a sample for ya...

You have a chance to use a Peluso251 and you have to ask this question???

Really, it matters what type of read it is...close proximity, breathy, dramatic read would benefit from the Peluso or SP C-1 with phantom powered preamp.

If you know how to "work" the mic, the SM58 may be the most pleasing overall.

If you can test before hand, most of the above should be fine. (And the quality of the preamp could make a difference.)
Let us know what you choose and why.
Thanks.

Thanks for the replies- I was trying to save set up time - on a crunch to get this in the can and over to the editor. Wish I could've just used the RE-20 - it's a no brainer for this type of read (poorly written propaganda - wish I'd said "no" when they asked me to do it).

I'll start with the Peluso and maybe try the KSM if I have the chance. I think the SP would be too bright for this type of read. Thanks again for the suggestions. I'll report back after it's done.

Cheers, Rez

AT3060! AT3060!

OK, so it's my favorite mic ever . . . never mind :o

I would prefer a Shure SM7 or a Heil PR40 over the RE20 myself. Next time you can think about it, pick those up....you'll LOVE them!

RE20 is what I use..over all my other mics, and ive got a lot of very expensive mics.. just FYI

RE20 was MADE for VO work, imo..

OK crew - the Peluso actually performed very well on my voice for this project. I used to do voiceovers and radio spots a LONG time ago (I think 1993 was the last time -- when they had me impersonate Barney for a Kemp Mill commercial :o then do the monster trucker voice for a car dealership all in the same session -:( nearly ruined what was left of my singing voice - ).

Here's the cool thing: my signal path was mic/pre/soundcard - 48k@24bit. Burned the file to 48k@16bit and sent to the video editor. That's it! No compression, eq, gate, normalizing or NOTHING!!! It honestly didn't need it! How cool is that? (It helps to know mic technique too though).

So yes, in a pinch -- HIGH marks for the sound of the Peluso 22 251!

However, after this session, I'm not quite sure using a tube mic is the best for voiceovers - at least not for my voice in the digital realm. Maybe if we were going to analog tape?!? It gave me a very pleasing harmonic distortion. Really nice. I could totally see this mic sounding AWESOME on a singer's voice blending really well with the music.

Unfortunately, the script was awful!!! I mean just terrible. It was obviously written by a non-pro who knew nothing about script writing, or english in general....Took me FOREVER to complete several run-on sentences, tongue twisters, etc. No big deal. I got to hear myself through the Peluso that much longer.

I wish I had time to A/B the other mics because they are all good mics for different things. It would've been interesting to see which would win for that "radio" voice...

Thanks again. Cheers, Rez

You weren't the "Kemp Mill Guy" voice, by any chance? You know, the "It's amazing, it's incredible! Kemp Mill Records breaks its own record!"

Also that dude did a bit for the Greaseman that he would work into his "bits": "Do you think that you and I could take a simultaneous constitutional?"

Grease always used to talk about "speckling the Sennheiser". I don't know which one, but I always presumed it was the 441 :o

For future reference...you should really try to get a hold of that suggested Heil PR-40 If you have a "radio" voice and are used to the RE-20. You will be shocked and amazed. ;)

Thanks ! I'll definitely look into it. Hopefully I won't need to do voiceovers again for a while though.

Sorry mshilarious, that wasn't me. That guy is a lot older than me. ;)

I'm amazed at how much really bad advertising copy we get to work with....it's obvious that nobody's ever tried to say it all out loud....let alone to time....
