voice recorders?

i was wondering if anyone has used voice recorders and has any opinions on them.

i found a 40 dollar digital or casette one at walmart and was thinking about getting one to record melody and lyric ideas when i come up with them and to record my bands practices with...would they work good with this at all?

I used to carry one of those around, it came in handy for a lot of things, including musical ideas.
