vocals & wavelab

I have recently started mixing my raw tracks realized that the vocals dont stand out. They are very dynamic so they only cut through when the vocalsist (male) is singing loudly. Then I stumbled upon dynamics in wavelab, started messing around and found that i could make the quite parts loud and loud parts quite.
it sounds wierd solo, but sounds better in the mix...

Is there a better way to do this, or if this is ok what is the proper way?
(im using cubase sx, wavelab and cakewalk)
anything ideas will help

i may be wrong but i think you are compressing it. do a search for compression within this forum or through your internet search engine for more.
