Vocals on top

I dig my vocals on top of the mix. My problem is the vocals don't sound like they blend well with the rest of the song. It sounds like a karaoke competition or something. What am I missing?
I'm not a great singer or anything, but I can hit the notes most times. I just need it to blend. And how much verb do I want on a vocal track?
 
I am not qualified to answer your entire question.
I do know that Vocal talent has little to do with cutting though the mix.
That is more about recording technique, Eqing and mixing.
Although, my songs DO sound like crap, I am making headway,
I have found that a lot of compression, in 2 steps, do help me get my vox to
cut though.
