My voice naturally sounds a whole lot like maynard keenan's(tool, apc).

Im trying to figure out ways to play around with things in CEPro to get my voice to sound more like his. I want it to sound close to his without being unnatural and mettalic sounding.

Any advice.

And before you give me advice on not copying someone else, Im just doing this to get a basic idea of how to approach this. Its a framework to build off of.

What Im mainly looking for is the sound achived on APC's Mer de Noms. Aenema's vocals sounds a bit too "recorded in a garage" for my tastes...

I know this isn't what you want, but maybe the framework should come from your own style...

With that said, the main characteristic of the Tool/APC vocal sound is an extreme level of compression. I know they use several Emperical Labs Distressors in their live shows and I believe in recording as well. The Distressor is one of the few compressors that sounds good in this application. Unless you have a spare $1000 or so laying around, a good compressor plugin will suffice. I'd suggest any of the Waves plugins.

The Distressor is kind of a "special" compressor, and its not too bad in price. Aenema sounds like a garage recording? Ummm, ok the crack is getting to ya ;)
Good n close n intimate with a mic that wont kill you on proximity... I can kinda hit that maybard thing too... I think alot of times hes not singing with alot of power, but lower and more breathy and up close, real close. I usually work the mic when trying to do that, I'll be right on it, and back off during louder parts (kinda like manual gain riding at the source).
Wanna do some vocals on some shit for me in a few months?

tool uses extreme compression??
Their music seems to have more dynamics than any out there.

I'll look into it tho.

Sure. Ill do some vocals. :)

The vocals are extremely compressed, the overall tracks just average...for the genre.

wow

i though enema was the best damned vocal job ever. (maybe not ever, but awsome)
