Hi,

I'm new to this forum and to the engineering side of recording. I've been playing guitar professionally with bands and for sessions for the last 8 years. I've recently purchased a VS-2480 and it's been great working with it. Anyhow... I'm going to record a duo, guitarist and percussionnist with vocals, live, in a living room (hard wood floors, big picture window, limited space) and I was wondering if anybody had done something like this before and can give me any advice or tips.

Thanks

Well, the first thing to be aware of is that the percussion is going to get into everything (guitar & vocal mics). The second thing is that the room sounds like it will be very "live", so bring lots of packing blankets (and maybe some thick rugs) to try to control the reflections a bit (1st thing, cover that window!).

After treating the room, I'd probably start with a good pair of SDCs in XY or ORTF 5-10' in front of the duo (do some short test recordings, adjust the distance/position until you get the best balance). Then add the vocal mics (LDCs most likely) and test again. You can then 'spot' mic the guitar and percussion as necessary.
