Sang quite a bit in my "younger" years. Now (decades later) I find I get hoarse after just a few songs and I cannot hit the high notes anymore. Is this just an aging problem or is it lack of training / use? There are still plenty of rockers my age who can still hit their high notes as they did back in their day. What's the secret??

The 'secret' is probably training.

If you haven't developed, or been taught, good vocal techniques for singing, there is a risk that you can damage your vocal chords. Sometimes this damage is irreversible. A common problem is the development of nodules on the vocal chords, usually caused by excessive or strained singing.

This is an interesting and informative article:

Curios then, how old, lots of rough singing ..or not, ..smoking?
I've only been '2nd singer roll over the years but my range is actually a bit higher and better now than it's ever been.

Yeah, how old are you ?
I remember a few years ago seeing an interview with Tom Jones and he said that as he got older he found he had to drop his songs by a semitone as the voice couldn't hit the high notes like he could previously. But he was in his 60s !

I suggest a professional vocal coach, even the best singers had them, and the ones that didn't, well, suffered the consequences. "gecko zzed" posted an article; I think you should definitely take a look because that vocal coach seems to know what he's doing. Good luck! :D
