Recorded some vocals about a month ago with a SM58 ( I know not the best mic for vocals) and I started mixing them in but they sound alittle muddy or cardboard like. I had the vocalist stand about 6"-8" off the mic. I have a high pass filter @ 100. The fundamental seems to be sitting at about 240. Is it better to increase the high pass or cut some at the fundamental or around 480 (the first harmonic, I think) ?

With the 58, you can afford to bring the vocalist in a bit closer next time - 8" is a bit far for that mic IMO...

Tame some of the offending freqs with a bit of EQ and see what happens....

i agree...

i've had the best results with the vocalists singing very close to the mic (1"-2") - unless i want a "far away" affect.
