hey guys, i'm looking for a good vocal mic for home recording and although i know a bit about drums and guitars, i'm senseless about vox. i will use it exclusively for vocals and will run it through my pod on the vox setting. any suggestions?

What is your price range and what are you plugging the mic into?

Hang out on the Mic board at this site for a while and you'll learn alot about mics. However, with a general quetion like "what's the best mic?" you will get very many different opinions.

As DJL indicates, it depends on budget, pre amps, type of voice, etc. etc.

If you are looking to buy your first mic, a Shure SM57 (around $80) would be a good start. Although it is not technically a "vocal mic" it is a good multi use mic (which can be used on vocals) that also works good to mic guitar cabs as well as snare drums and tom.

Normally, the best "vocal mics" are condensor mics (vs. a dynamic mic - such as the SM57). However, these normally arel a little more costly ($150 and up - although they seem to be getting less costly all the time), and require 48v "phantom power" - which I do not beleive you can get from your POD.

thanks, i'm looking for a dynamic mic, that will run on without phantom or with battery power. i've had experience with the sm57 on drums and wouldn't consider it for vocals, i'd go with the sm58 if i was going with shure. i've seen some prices for some mxl and behringer mics and just don't know what kind of quality your getting for the price. the pod does not have phantom power. i'm looking to spend up to 150$ us.

sm57 and sm58 are basically the same thing so you could use a sm57 for vocals, quite alot of musicians have =)

Id go with a Marshall MXLv67 and an Audio Buddy or Art Tube MP.......

For $150 or under, I'd get;

1) Used Shure 545 (sm-57's ancestor) or used SM57
2) Used M-Audio Audio Buddy
3) Vocal pop screen (not foam!)

Just remembered to mention...
The SM57 has a cleaner sound than the '58, as the foam ball
screws up the resonse pattern and cuts down on high end response.
