so i've been reading all this stuff about what cheap mics to use for vocals and people are mentioning that some mics are better for higher vocals and some are better for low pitch vocals but i want to buy one mic b/c ill want to be able to use it to sing falsetto and to sing really low pitch sonorous kinda doors-ish stuff. the thing is that i'm a highschool student that doesn't have time for a afterschool job cuase im busy with art and music and stuff so i cant afford a really expensive mic so whats the most economic mic i can get with the most range and quality? (i want to know what the best affordable mic is that can accomodate a variety of uses, both vocal and for like recording my accoustic and just like random stuff)

Im terribly impressed that a high schooler knows who the Doors are ......now, this answer will really depend on the $$$ budget you are talking about....if you have no budget whatsoever, its perfectly ok to start with a WalMart 9.99 mic...Im gonna get flamed for that.....

now, if you can dig up a new or used Shure sm57 (they go for $79 new) its an awesome all around mic and you cant go wrong with one.....if you are looking for something in between as far as $$, check out Radio Shack as they have semi-decent stuff..im gonna get flamed again.....

the biggest thing is getting in there and recording and having fun...also you have to consider that a pro mic may need some kind of preamp...do you have any gear at all right now and what do you plan on recording on?

EV makes a very inexpensive mic line..I belive its called the "Cobalt series"...Excellent mic for about 40.00 new..Look at SamAsh catalogs..Good luck

Usually at Guitar Center they include a mike stand too as part of the
purchase price of $79.00 for a Shure SM57.

i have the cubase vst project pack and im planning to build a preamp at some point. (i already have experience building a few effects pedals and i looked at a few schematics and it doesn't look too[/U] hard. but yeah ill definately check out that shure sm57.

I recently bought a SM-57 and used it through an ART Tube pre. I must say I was surprised with the vocal tracks I made with it. It's not high quality but it did get my attention. But then maybe I'm easily impressed. :D

I ordered a SP C1 yesterday. Should arrive Monday. I'm going to find out if the reviews and the threads in this forum were just pulling my leg or not. ;) If it turns out to be a dud it won't be too bad. I've been needing another door stop. :D

You might also check out the Marshall Electronics MXL 603s small condensor, although for a first mic I think it would be hard to beat an SM57. You'll always be able to find a use for it. You can also often find them used for $50. Check ebay or Harmony Central--our your local paper, pawn shop, or music store.

For the lower, doors-style stuff on a tight budget, you might want to try an sm-58 close-mic'ed. It has decent proximity effect -- in other words, if sing really close to it, it will give your voice a little fuller, bassier sound. The 57 doesn't really have that effect. I have an sm-7 that can make you sound like Barry White, but it's a little pricier than a 58. Good luck.

No way gidge...no flame here......One of the best songs I ever recorded on guitar was through a radio shack mic. I used a Radio Gack, I mean Shack mic in the back of a Ross solid ste 'amp' with a zoom effects procesor. The whole signal chain was CHEESE. The sound? Incredible. its funny, i've never been able to recreate it!!!!

One word of advice Checkthepenies....never sell any of your equipment and write down everything you do. I have sold and bought soooooooo much shit over the years i am truly sorry. I also have recorded tunes on 'inferior gear' and wish i remember what settings I had everyting on....

Hindsight is 20/20.......I wish Forsight was
