Three new pieces of equipment, and I'd like to make the best use of all three;Oktava MK213 mic,Bellari mic preamp, and a boss BR-8.First difficulty is getting the gain adjusted on the preamp so the clip light comes on at the loudest parts only. From there I need to adjust gain & input levels on the BR-8.I've done a few vocal takes (6-8" from mic With p-filter) but the results so far have been thin and slightly distorted.(sort of a slight tin can sound).I'd like suggestions for getting a beefier vocal, using the present set-up.Also explanation of two switches on mic,(no instructions included).Any suggestions? Thanks!

Do a word search on the mic, you may come up with info on the switch and/or even a downloadable manual.

Are the switches marked in any way?

Is that a 219? If so its a side address mic. Make sure your singing into the front of the mic and not the back. It's an easy mistake to make.

Yo Rat of Many Tracks:

Suggest one thing about doing vocals. Articulation of syllables and consonants is very important. Listen to some of Sinatra's recordings and you can hear him spit out every T and etc.

Besides that, you need to know how your gear functions and you learn that by experimenting time and time and time and time again.

After all, practice makes perfect.

thanks/4tips

Fellow mic mentors, Thanks for the advice.First of all, it's a 319;also known as a 219-A, according to the Oktava, RTT website. So, as was suggested, once I sang into the "side" of the mic, instead of the top, things beefed up real nice. Also learning as I go with E.Q. on the vocals. Not bad results for a few shots in the dark.As for the articulation tips;good advice for the studio and live.Could a little Rustoleum be in order between takes? Thanks again.
