I am looking for a new "vocal" mic" I have been using an SM7b, a Rode NT1-a and a few other "cheaper"(MXL) Large Diaphram Condensers.

I am willing to spend up to $1,000 dollars. I am looking for something "hi-fi" full, warm, and smooth. I really enjoy the way Matt Belamy from Muse's voice sounds. I am not saying I am as good of a singer at Matt, however I somewhat similiar style.

I have been looking at Mojave Audio MA-200, Mojave Audio MA-201 fet, Nueman TLM-103, AKG 414

Any thoughts?

I Wouldn't choose the TLM103,If you have $1k You could buy a bunch of used Mics,KSM32($280 Used),AT4050($280 Used), AKG214($280 Used) and $160 for Mic Stands or cables. If you like the NT1A you could look for the NTK in the Used Market for ($300)

do your record yourself only? or a load of bands and stuff??

if it's just for you, i would recommend just trying out as many microphones as you can. not always easy,,,,,but possible.

Dont know much about the Mohavie audio stuff. The TLM103 has a bump in the mids that makes singers sound honky...Shure KSM44 is a very nice mic in this price area with switchable patterns...the AT4050 is a nice 3 pattern mic too...the AT4047 has that extra bump in the midhighs that you are looking for in a Neumann style mic...the KSM32 is a smooth mic that is fantasic but best used on only the best vocalists because it isnt as flattering as the AT4047

Go to a place where you can listen to all of them side by side if you can...MARS music used to be a good place for that.

Oh...and if you can...buy used...with the rest of the $1000...you might be able to get a decent preamp to go with it...used in this ressession is the magic word...tons of guys who got into this 10 years ago are selling thier stuff off cheap to keep thier homes.

Even you can buy a TLM103 Used for $600 And a Used FMR RNP :D But i'll go for the 4047 And RNP

Id see if I could score a Great River ME1V with the AT4047...the RNP might be arround $200 used right now...try craigslist...not only can you test the stuff but you get the oppertunity to dicker people down.

I WANT A RNP For $200... Where????

In this market...that might be on the high end for a used one...it isnt the sort of piece that goes up in value and is arround $400 new.

Yes, you're describing a BeesNeez James - handmade (including the capsule) in Australia. I have one (along with two other Beesneez mics) and love it.

Note the price listed in in AUD not USD, which would bring the mic price down, although still a little above your budget.

I sold off my two Peluso 22 251 and 22 47, good mics in their own right, along with some other mics and odds and ends, to fund my purchases (James, Arabella, Phelicity) and am extremely happy. You can email Ben Sneesby (owner) and he will call you.

Do a search on Gearslutz to find other's opinions.

Good luck

As the mic-pre suggestions have been made, what, currently, is your primary mic-pre?

FYI-Mercenary Audio is showing the Brauner Phantom C(lassic) at $1800.

I've done some quick searches on the internet and it appears that the M-Audio Sputnik at $799 might be a really good option.

HSG ( a misplaced Pittsburgher :D)

AND YET THE 414 IS A STAPLE USED WITH GREAT SUCCESS BY MANY ( JUST NOTICED MY CAPS WERE LOCKED.....sorry)

Well my choice has been made....I went with a BLUE Stage One.

Here are my thoughts. Inter-changable and "upgradeable" capsules
I have used this microphone from a recording artist and engineer.
Versatility.
Somewhat "non-standard"
Pick it up new and discounted....I got it for $560 with shipping.

Up next in my purchase list I am thinking a pair ofr AKG 414 or....Gefell 930s....

descisions descisions.
