The only remedy against vocal issues is voice training. If you keep your instrument healthy, you won't have problems.

Interesting article. I just shout at the kids. Works a treat !

I second this. If you're not producing the sound correctly, you'll wind up with nodes, regardless of how much you gargle, drink chicken soup or refrain from smoking and drinking. For what it's worth, trained singers (I was one at one time) can "sing through" a cold or sore throat (laryngitis is another story, though). If your voice feels or sounds strained, you're doing it wrong.

Tee hee, i've never heard it called "Grandma’s soup" before but i love it and will call it so from now on :thumbs up: I've never tried it with thyme, just the hot water, lemon and honey. However, if it was before a gig i just went the full hog and added a shot of whiskey (tut tut! i know it's naughty but hey :o )

Although not necessarily a tip for helping sore throats, i've found that if i'm recording and the singer is getting frustrated and starts to lose focus on their technique and just starts shouting (or whatever) then a nice cup of decaf tea and a 5 minute break works wonders. Maybe it's the brit in me but a hot cup of tea tends to help in all situations of frustration, as does some fresh air, although in these cases the decaf is a must as caffeine is a no-no!

Couldn't agree more.. i always got taught that a runner doesnt run without warming up and singers shouldn't either.

If im ill i will make a 'Special Brew' Consisting of Sage, Orange Zest, Lemon Zest, Cut an orange up n squeeze in the juice, fresh ginger.. all together in a pan bring to the boil to stew everything together, then sieve it out and add manuka honey. Sounds wrank but tastes lovely and does the trick if im a bit under the weather,

But touch wood not had a problem yet, just warm ups :)

Funny story, triggered by your runner analogy.

I heard/read somewhere that Geoff Tate of Queensryche actually had them bring a treadmill on tour, and that he would spend a half hour running on it, prior hitting the stage. Get those lungs going and all of that. Is it true? No idea, but it does kind of make sense.

As far as vocal training, I thing this is one of those areas where formal instruction is almost a requirement. Now I know that there are plenty of self taught singers, but we're talking about your voice. Your physical body. If I go up and play my guitar, and my fingers are sore or stiff, I can still muscle my way through it. It's far harder to do, and much more noticable if a singer tries that. Just take care of yourself.

Hi! I drink freshly boiled ginger with fresh honey to take care of my voice :D
