Well after 10+ years away from music, I'm ready to get back into it so I'm pretty clueless about all the new equipment. I started this quest with my sights set on a vocal processor which I can record on my PC (I have no software either). I was looking at the Digitech Vx400, but then I also looked at some guitar workstations, the Digitech GNX3 and GNX3000, thinking I can get two tools in one (vocals and guitar). I also play guitar and would love to have the effects, my old Ibenez PT-3 is ready for the dump heap. It seems that the Vx400 and GNX3000 have the same 3 band EQ and compression, so I'd rather spend the extra $150 and get the GNX3000 and use it for both vocals and guitar. Is this possible, or am I in need of serious modern day equipment education? Also, what kind of software will I need to lay down some tracks on my PC?

for vocals, you may want to take a look at TC Helicon. They have a few decent vocal processors that can do everything from pitch correction to four part harmonies.I have the Voiceworks rack unit and I'm pretty happy with it.
for guitar, a Line 6 XTLive may be a good idea.

You might also check out Line 6's new line of vocal/guitar processing emulation devices - I think they're called the UX1 and UX2 or something similar (www.line6.com). They purport to be emulations of classic preamps for vocals and guitar amps and effects for guitar. Would be a fairly inexpensive solution for computer-based recording, I would think, but I haven't heard them so I can't really say what they sound like. I AM a very happy Line 6 customer who currently owns a Variax and a Pod XT Live.

Ditto on the TC Helicon; I have the VoiceLive processor which I am extremely pleased with.

I highly recommend not using a guitar processor for vocals... although a vocal processor can add some interesting effects to guitar, but certainly wouldn't stand alone as a great guitar processor. Pick up a vocal processor... and a guitar processor...

this might be helpful for you:

i've got a Joemeek VC8 Fathead,

its a channel strip but its also a guitar preamp, with a floor controller,

you get an XLR preamp with 48v phantom,
guitar/bass input
there's an insert so you can put an EQ or whatever on the preamp,
then there is opto distortion which sounds really special !
then there's the opto compressor which sounds warm,
its got presets and amount of compression, easy to use,
then there's the EQ, sweepable low, sweep mid and high

this thing also has an FX loop so you can add reverb, delay to it,
its got a direct output (wet or dry signal)
and two outputs

there's a foot controller to switch on distortion, comp,eq,mute

there's a groundlift switch to avoid hum

---------------------

now for years i used it to record vocals and bass guitar,
the preamp is decent, i like the compressor it really has a useful sound,
i like the eq for guitars and bass, for vocals i don't use it much, just a little cut in the lowmids

i've even recorded sound samples of birds that sing outside with this thing (with an AKG c414) , silent enough to do this.

you don't get a ton of freaky effects but i don't really care,
first you need to get a decent sound out of your guitar or vocals,
then the easiest thing to do is use reverbs and crazy plugins,
adding a stompbox to the setup doesn't cost much

these units are hard to find since they're out of production,
i'm selling mine but to be honest i'm trying to sell it to some local people for €400 - i have no idea about your budget, or how cheap you can find them in the US, i think i paid about €900 when it was new

i got some of the opto distortion on the "vocals" in this tune,
its not a song, its just something with sounds in, a test.

I don't see anything for vocal on their site. I do have the pod xt, love it.
