I'm still considering a good preamp. I have been told good things about the M-Audio DMP3. I want to focus on acoustic guitar and vocals right now, And like I said this was recommended to me. Anyone else with a fairly knowledgable opinion?

very clean and decent quality. Should be good for acoustic and vocals.

just got mine two weeks ago with an rnc compressor. there is no better combo for the money. period
blake

The DMP3 is good, particularly for the price. Of course, there are better, much better and incredibly better pres for vocals and acoustic guitar. The rub is that they cost more, some a lot more.

Just curious, in your opinion what are some "much better" contenders for acoustic guitar? I was thinking my next move up should be a Hardy M1, but that's $1,700 for two channels. I realy want one, but Ouch! I don't think the RNP is a significant step up. Perhaps the Sytek is but I don't want to pay for two extra channels I won't use. Then there's the Davisound two channel for $800.

Strictly for acoustic guitar. Well, ok, maybe some vox.

A great pre for acaustic guitar and vocals is the Pendulum SPS-1 (pendulumaudio.com). It's main focus is an acoustic guitar pre, for use with pickups. However, it is also a two channel mic pre. It has many features, including parametric eq and summing bus. It's extremenly versitle and can be used for gigging too. I have one, along with a John Hardy M-2.

A lower cost alternative is the RNP.

why don't you 'THINK' the rnp is significant step up?

Well, my current opinion is based on a pre shootout between the DMP3 and RNP that was on this Board a year or so ago. The DMP3 just sounded better to me (and a lot of other people). I know these internet pre comparisons are very flawed, but I did buy a DMP3 and have compared it to a Behringer, Mackie, Meek, and it beats them all for (finger picking) acoustic guitar IMO.

I know a lot of experienced recordists and pros think very highly of the RNP, and I know some don't. I haven't tried it myself, but I am not at this time convinced the $475 I spend on an RNP is going to significantly improve my AC recordings. Hell, maybe a Pendulum SPS-1 wouldn't. I've read a lot about these pres (RNP + DMP3) on the internet, and I'm having a hard time recalling anyone who has spent time with both saying the RNP was a significant step up. Of course, it's all subjective anyway.

I would welcome a chance to try an RNP for a couple of weeks (with no obligation to buy), and I would be thrilled if it proved me wrong and I ended up loving it. In the meantime I'm still skeptical.
