Hey all.

Is anyone out there using a Fostex vm88 or vm200 to pump 8 more channels (via ADAT) into their VF-16 or VF-160 (thereby recording 16 tracks simultaneoulsy)? I'm thinking about buying one of these units (vm88 or vm200), and I'm wondering how easy the process is. And if there are any advantages/disadvantages to either of those 2 digital mixers.

NOTE: Originally, I was hoping to accomplish this (pumping 8 additional channels via ADAT) by using an older MOTU 828 interface that I inherited from my brother, but I've been unsuccessful in getting any ADAT signal into my VF-16 via the 828. Has anyone out their used an 828 (mark I) with their VF16 or VF160?

TIA,

ray

The VM88 is a great mixer, according to the review in Future Music magazine, that you can access via their website. It uses the same convertors and 32bit processing as the VF160 (or rather the VF160 uses the same as the VM88). The VM200 adds motorized faders (I believe). I think you can get the original brochures on these units via the Japanese Fostex website.

Plus, from memory, the VF160 manual describles how to hook these babies up to the VF160. That's all I know.

Personally, I'd go for the VM88 because I would think the motorization thing might become problematic over time, but that's an uneducated opinion...

The VM200 kicks ass over the VM88. And the going ebay prices are pretty similar. I've never had a problem with my VM200. I looked at supplimenting with the VM88, but I couldn't find one cheaper than a VM200.

Yeah the VM200 is a mighty beast. Still surprised at how cheap it is for the features.

One went for about $400AUD on eBay recently...ridiculous amount of bang for buck.

As for motorised faders...they are a great way to go and are no less reliable than other components really. No reason to think they will fail any more than any other moving component.

Cheers!
