I am also a VM200 user. I have Cakewalk PA9.03 and Sonar. I think I've finally switched to Sonar permanently. I'm still learning my VM200, as well as my Roland VS-840. Still have alot to learn. I haven't even used the VM200's effects yet, but I've learned alot about the rest of it to date. I've been using Cakewalk for the most part since v2 for Midi, and v5 for audio as well....just as a hobby. Although I did record and edit 6 songs for my band Hung Jury. The MP3's that Cakewalk PA9 produced, though, don't compare to the quality of the Wav's or CD. You can check them out on MP3.com. Just search for Hung Jury of Virginia.

All of this was before I bought the VM200. I bought it this year.

Hi Tom:

I thought this was you! I figure we'd give this forum a shot. Maybe there are some users out there that don't link to the CW newsgroups.
How's that SONAR going?. I see that the Dakota card is under $450. Hmmmm may have to pick that one up! Have you tried the WDM drivers?.
let me know.

Tony

Geez...small world! Yep, it's me! Yeah, I'm sure there are plenty of VM200 users out there that don't use Cakewalk! I am loving Sonar with dual monitor. I'm working the kinks out of the system now. Lately I've been chasing some static I hear during playback throught the PA. Part of it is a grounding issue. I've found that a large amount of the noise goes away when I plug the mixer into the PA, instead of where the PC is plugged in. Probably about 2/3 of it!

I'm also loving the flexibility that the Dakota has given me. I haven't ventured into the WDM drivers yet. I understand they just came out with a new Beta. I don't know if it cured problems I've heard about with Midi. I had read that they had issues with Midi, so I've held off, because I use the Midi alot...mostly for sync and controling the Mixer in Sonar, but when I am done, I will also have my 2 keyboards, a sound module and my Guitar Controller plugged in.

I did some recording on the VS-840 last weekend, then transferred the tracks into Sonar. Unfortunately, the VS-840 can only send out 2 channels of audio (digital or analog) at a time. However, using MTC, I was able to send them in pairs and have them be in perfect sync without further editing. That was the first time I'd ever used MTC... Sonar jumped right to the point in time that I had started playback on the VS-840. That was cool. I did have to delete all of the empty space prior to the music on Sonar, which was no big deal. It was a great learning experience.

Any luck with your Studioware panel?

BTW, I'm running the MME drivers for the Dakota at about 22ms without trouble. If you go for the Dakota, it's $399 at www.studiocat.com. If they haven't updated their website to reflect it, just call them and ask for Jim.

I've just about eliminated the singer's Mackie from my setup. I was treating it as primary, but I've been recabling so that most everything goes straight to the Patch panel, which leads to the ins and outs of the VM200. The only signal I've been taking from the Mackie's direct outs are the vocals.

The next thing I need is some good Studio Monitors. I'm looking at the JBL LSR25p's and the Yamaha NS10 series, per recommendations I found on this website. I'm also considering the Roland DS-50A 24-bit digital powered speakers and the Hafler amp and speaker packages. Any opinions are welcome! My wife will probably buy them for me for Christmas....

Hey, I'm a VM200 owner, using Cakewalk PA8 (upgrading to Sonar within the month). I'm using the ADAT in and outs with the Terratec EWS88D interface. I would love to hear and share tips on the VM200 with cakewalk. I've only had it for a month and so far I love it. I would really like to hear about controlling cakewalk faders and transport via midi.

Saturday morn 10:40 EDT USA

Not new to audio stuff, nor computers. New to digital recording.

In the midst of total confusion at the moment learning about vm200, dspf, and sonar. Attempting to get basic routings. (Help me Rhonda, Help, Help me Rhonda.)

Using the adat i/o of the vm200 to connect to the ax-16 i/o daughter card of the yamaha dsp factory.

Using LUI to configure the DSPF. I have attempted to use the C-mexx trial version but cannot get output. And no instructions for the trial version. Trial version does not appear to have other than basic output routings.

One of the planned activites: dub many of the 4-track (tascam a-3440) tapes to sonar for fun and completion.

Looking for some quick ref charts/ keyboard templates for:
DSPF
Fostex vm200
Sonar

Chaps,

I recommend that you check the last 90 days at this site for the following post by Verb : Fostex - VM200 Digital Mixer (FVM200) . We had some good chats about the VM200 - I have posted a Studioware Panel there too. Perhaps you guys would like to give it a go. But please note that if you make changes, ensure you leave the original copyright notice. The VM200 mixer is a great machine - there is a lot that you can do with it so good luck.

I have just purchased a vm200 and I plan to intergrate it with Cakewalk Sonar through my Yamaha DSP2416 card. I can see that I am going to need help. The manual for the vm200 is not very clear on how to route effects. I also have the Fostex vr800 recorder and ADAT (blackface).

HELP!!

Monday 1:10pm EDT USA

I have been working on signal routings.

I will post an XL spreadsheet with such soon.

For now:
(Effects to the left of me, effects to the right of me, slowly I turned,,,Niagra Falls,...)

Given the number of possibilities I have decided to limit choices now to this:
use the EQ and EFFECTS of the VM200 during recording only- if ever
use the DSPF effects as much as possible - reduces CPU use
use the Sonar effects when such makes quality sense

I want to learn as much as possible about SONAR and the DSPF. Learning also about the VM200 is too much right now.

I wish the VM200 had limiting/compression. Since the DSPF does I may use the REC ins for direct recording when possible, fewer electronics to pass through. For mics, I will use the vm200 and compress/limit on the way in if necessary

Since currently I have only one outboard device to use the adat interface, I have decided to use the AX16 Adat A for input and the B output. This is easier to maintain routing through the DSPF. (To have the AX16 sync to the fostex the AX16 A input must be used.)

For monitoring: Use Sonar for basic mix: Sonar Main wave1 out L/R to DSPS channels 1/2 in to bus 1/2 to B2-1/2 out to AX16 B out to VM200 9/10 in.

For recording: VM200 adat out 3-8 to AX16 A in to DSPF chan 11-16 to buses 3/4/5/6/7/8 to Sonar wave in 2/3/4.
My keyboard synth is plugged into channels 7/8 on the vm200/ ADAT 7/8 out to dspf chans 15/16.

For mixing: I intend to use Sonar and the DSPF for all mixing. I do not intend to run the signal to the vm200 for processing or mixing. (This means mostly, and for now. I can invision some outboard processing.)

The above will probably change as I become more familiar with all the gear.

Some people on the SONAR newgroups have described using the VM200 as a controller for SONAR and for the DSPF. After I am comfortable with the basic stuff working I will venture there.

I am using LUI for a DSPF interface. I have DSPmix, but it is not happy with win2k. I may buy c-mexx c-console if I decide I want to do more real time work with the DSPF.

Too many choices for all the stuff.

Okay now

has anyone had any luck storing fader movements in Sonar XL

and if so how did you do it.....

I love both the vm200 and Sonar XL (with a lexicon core2 imagine that) but I can't get the mixer and Sonar to wash each other's hands...

Let me know something please....

I can answer a few other questions people may have about the vm200; I just can't do this....I assume it has to do with setting a midi track and recording to that midi track and playing back to the same midi port, that the vm200 is set on... I just can't make it play back. Cakewalk even looks like it is recording the fader movements in the event list when I check that...It just won't play back....

I need help....

Thanks alot

Wow, we did end up getting alot of action here all of sudden, didn't we tonester!?!

Well, how in the world did you get Sonar to agree with the Core2? No matter how hard I tried all that I could do is crash over and over again, although it worked ok in PA9.03. My Dakota card works great. I'm real happy with it and it's features. I only wish I had more time to learn about all of this equipment. I'm learning the VM200, the Roland VS0840ex and Sonar all at one time. Sonar isn't too bad so far, as I've been working with Cakewalk since v2, at least....I can't remember v1....I was so much younger then....

If Lexicon would continue supporting the Core2, it would be a great card. It is loaded with features...all of the features I needed. Did they ever fix the Wavepipe acceleration issue? They told me that all support was coming to an end for that card, but that they would fix the Wavepipe Acceleration bug before they gave up on it....

Tom Kemp

oh yeah...

No wavepipe acceleration...

I'm personally not missing it. (never had it)

Sonar XL works fine with it. (pIII 800, 256m Ram, asus board, and AGP video card without hardware acceleration is the key....oh and also you would have to disable your USB ports)...

but its a great card to have with the VM200 because the adat outs plus the quarter inch outs = 16 channels of quality output....(the exact number and types of ins the vm200 posseses)

the direct adat ins plus the 4 quarter inch ins provde 12 channels of simultaneous recording.... where else are you going to find that for $200

Sheesh

but anyway I still need help with the vm200 automation....anybody got some word on that....

Thanks

This is great!

Great to hear about all you VM-200 users out there. Yes Tnt, it is a small world, and getting smaller.

I'm really interested in those of you using the Lexicon core 2 with SONAR XL. That card has always suited my needs perfectly, but I have hesitated because Cakewalk themselves told me they had crappy drivers.

Can you guys tell me what kind of latency you are getting with this card? And do you have to disable the USB ports? My Midi interface is the Midisport 2X2.

Also, I see one of you has created a StudioWare panel for the VM-200. Where can I get that. I've been at work on one, but have encountered a lot of frustration. I could post mine, if anyone would want to see it.

t

uh huh

disabling the USB is a must....as far as the Core2 goes

mixer help folks automation answers are out there....

I know I waited to late to start this project but I've got till monday to finish it...

Peace to everyone though

VM-200 is great!

I have been using the vm 200 for almost a year now. I started off using the mixer and the adat i/o in my fostex d-90. This works excellent. Lately I have been using the mixer with a frontierdesigns wavecenter pci card and the program n-track with mme drivers. This combo works flawlessly! Get a vm-200 before they are gone! you will not be dissapiointed

Have been reading avidly on everyone elses experiences with the VM 200 and it came down to a toss up between this and the EVENT EZbus...

I shall let you know how I get on after the weekend.

Dave

Hey, Dave,

As far as the extra Audio I/O, you do realize that the VM200 is 20-bit, right? Just so you know up front. I don't mind it, myself, but I do believe that the VM88 is 24-bit, and has a similar configuration, from what I read. I use both a Fostex VM200 and a Fostex VC8 A/D/A, so I'm getting all 16 ADAT I/O's, plus a S/PDIF I/O...not to mention more than enough MIDI I/O between my Dakota and my built-in SB sound card (I only use it for it's MIDI I/O). Live is indeed good!

As far as being a controller, I love it for that, and wouldn't mind having a 2nd to spread it out a little.

Yup....
Fully aware that it is 20Bit /48Khz... I can live with that quite happily....

I have been reading about teh VM-200's as much as i can in the last month and this offeres the best bang for $$ that I can find anywhere.

Unless I can find ddx cheap ;)
