Hey Peeps I am working on my home studio is there a reason why I should not use my computer as my equipment? I just purchased these items:1. Cubase 2. Propellerhead Reason, and Cakewalk. I also have Sony Acid 5.0 and Cool Edit. I don't know what sound card to get. And can anyone suggest a cheap but good recording mic. I also have a small mixer but don't know if I need it with the software I'm using. Please help!!! I want to do low end recording.

My PC spec:
P4 2.4 GHz
1Ghz DDR
80 GB HDD
2x DVD 16X Burners
etc......

that’s an awful lot of software for low end recording. that’s about $1600 worth of software. If you can afford that why request a cheap mic? Or why do you have a small mixer? You should invest more on equipment and stick to one program. Cubase would have been all you needed.

I just purchased these items

A plasma screen television with the serial scratched off
A cd player that appears to have been ripped out of a car

It doesn't make much sense to blindly purchase like 4 programs that all do the similar things while having no clue about how to use them....
I know if I was going to buy a membership to a golf club, I would probably know a thing or two about the golf balls...

I'll rephrase the question for you..
"I just cracked a hell of alot of software, I am not planning on investing any money really into my recordings, I just want to play around at home with these programs....what mic should I get for cheap.."
Well, now that is more clear of a question.
If you have a decent soundcard already existing on your computer, you could go the route of grabbing a mid priced dynamic mic, something like the Shure SM57 89bucks and something like the Art Tube MP for like 50bucks... YOU HAVE to get a Preamp to boost the signal of your mic. Then you go from your pre to your computer soundcard mic input with an adapter. This will sound okay in some cases. I think the Creative Audigy Soundcards do a pretty damn good job. Makes me mad at how good of a job they actually do.
Or you could spring like 250 bucks and get something that would be a beast to you...probably...
Like the Lexicon Omega USB interface.
It will act as your soundcard and have 2 onboard preamps. You could use this with an SM57 and something like an MXL 990 60bucks Musiciansfriend.com
By springing the 250 89 and 60, uh...what like 400 dollars grab some cables a set of monitors... headphones.... Hell, shit adds up
Quickest way to get any sound into the computer....grab the Art MP like I said, the appropriate cables to get it to go from a 1/4" to 1/16 I believe, whatever the input on your soundcard on your computer is, and some mic, whether it be a ten dollar mic from walmart or something you steal from your kid sis's karaoke machine, you'll be laying down Phat rap songs in no time sounding just like fity and luda.... and whisper song II and all kinds of great stuff!
