Anyone have any experience with violins?? My 5 yr old daughter has been asking for one for quite a while, so she's getting one for christmas. However, Santa doesn't have a clue. I am pretty sure she needs a 1/8 size and Santa is willing to spend up to $100 which will cover everything; case, bow strings, bridge, rosin, etc.

I know in this price range, I'm going to find the good deals along with pure junk, so hopefully someone here can help me avoid the junk.

What brand/model have you had good experiences with?? Which should I not consider??

Thnx!!!

Sorry, Chilli - my father was a violinist but I know jack about them... I just wanted to remind you to get her a hat too so you can install her outside the shopping centre whilst you and the missus get the groceries.... doesn't matter what level of competence she's at, people will be unable to resist throwing money in the hat of a 5 yo girl playing the violin... :)

Gift will pay for itself in no time... :laughings:

I imagine brands that specialise in a wide range of quality budget instruments, like Yamaha, probably would be a good bet though. Happy shopping....

Good for her!! :) :guitar:

Sorry I don't know much about brands either. But be prepared to cover your ears. :D My friend has a 2,000 dollar violin and even that sounds like crap. And she's an excellent player too!

Thanks anyways, guys. She got to play our neighbor's violin over the weekend. And even though she couldn't reach the fingerboard, she got a good tone out of it.  We're encouraged. :)

I'm so looking forward to having a fiddle player in the house. You better believe I'll be teaching her about pentatonic scales in a few years.... :guitar: :p

I don't know much about teh violins myself, but I do know about this site. Everything I've bought from them has been awesome.
Maybe you can find some reviews on any of these

If your going to see the violin in person before purchasing it Chili - Bring a tuner and tune it up.
Pluck away or bow it for awhile and be sure that the tuning pegs don't slip.

And don't forget that the bow is HALF of the instrument! No skimping should be done as far as the bow is concerned.

Well, I went and done the deed today. Bought this ONE

It's probably nothing more than a cardboard box, but I'm pretty certain my daughter's attention span won't last that long, either. I thought about going to a local store, but at this price... eh, you know. :o

Yeah Henry, I never put too much thought into the bow. I knew it had to be horse hair and that you have to rosin it up a lot. If she loses interest (which at 5 yrs old, I'm certain she will) then it will become part of the decor and hang on the wall with my guitars. :D

Thanks much guys. :)
