violin like guitarsound

hi there

normally i'm not the kind of guy who wants to "nail" a specific guitar-tone I hear.

BUT: the sound of the guitar in the solo of jbj's "blaze of glory" (yeah, it's a while ago) has always fascinated me - so maybe someone can give me some hints on how to achieve this.

in my ears it sounds kind of violine like. this makes me think of a hollow-body guitar, but I might be wrong (and I hope so, because I don't have one... hehehe).

anyway:

I've got a jackson strat, an epi les paul and some telecaster copy. as for amps I have my v-amp and a peavey with a multi-effects section in it - with a little tweaking almost anything is possible.

so... how should I start to get this kind of sound?

Get a volune pedal and sweep in on certain notes/chords and you can get a violin type effect.

i know this effect: i even can tweak my compressor of the peavey in a way that I don't even need a pedal.

but the thing I'm looking for is not the dynamics but really the _sound_... kind of hard to explain. you really need to know the song.

The guy playing lead on that track is Jeff Beck, just so you know. Given that, I'll bet he used a strat.
A lot of those "attack-less" notes are sounded by sheer force of the left hand sliding into them, and Jeff's use of the whammy bar, i.e. he slacks the strings and then whips the bar back to pitch, causing the strings to vibrate on their own.
The whole JBJ Young Guns album has some great songs, and Jeff Beck plays on the entire album, along w/ appearances by Little Richard, Aldo Nova, and others. Randy Jackson plays bass. Of all Jon bon's albums, it is probably my favorite.

When it comes to a guy like Beck you aren't going to get his tone with the same gear. He is one of the best guitarists alive. He could play a mexican nylon string through a telephone and it would sound amazing.

Usually they use an Ebow for a violin type effect but with Beck who knows.

I know he's great and I like the bits I've heard so far. and as with any great player: the tone comes out of his hands:

BUT: believe me, I myself sound much more Jimi with my strat thru a marshall-like amp using the neck single-coil than with my les paul thru a mesa boogie.

so what I want to say: a similar setup won't do the job but it sure helps!

I've never been a huge Jeff Beck fan, so I'm not really the guy to ask about his gear and such, but if memory serves doesn't he pick w/ his fingers? I do know for sure that on the particular track your talking about (Blaze of Glory) it sure sounds like he does. He also man-handles the whammy bar like I said before to get the strings to vibrate.

One more thing that might help:

I distinctly remember that about the time that album came out there was an issue of Guitar Magazine that had Jon Bon and Jeff Beck together on the cover and had an article talking about the making of that album.

Maybe you could order the back-issue somehow.

Jeff Beck is a Strat Marshall kind of guy, but that wont help you get his sound in the least. He did blow by blow on a Les Paul, and it still sounded just like Jeff Beck. It is all in his hands. Also, he does not use a pick, he uses his thumb like a pick, and that is it. If you want to hear him at his best, though, go out and buy some of his albums. He is one of the best ever.

That's because Beck has found his note and Yngwie is still looking.

Beck plays a lot with his fingers, no pick. I dont know how he does it. Also, comparing Beck and Yngwie is like comparing apples to oranges. Personally I think Malmsteen is a dikhead, no wait, now he is a fat, bloated dikhead. Beck is first class.

ok, then i will assume from your quote that you are of the school that gear doesn't matter.......

in that case, it boils down to the fingers.

Holdsworth, for example, and eric j., for that matter, sound pretty much the same even when they play acoustic guitars.

evh, the same.

i'd start with an acoustic guitar, and figure out how to finger, pull-off and hammer-on, and pick with little or no effect from the pick itself, other than to simply get the string started...

then i'd work on your phrasing and timing.

that's how to get THAT sound.

ok. I read about Jeff playing without a pick too and I think you guys are just right about the whammy-stuff (thanks so far)... I have a question there:

would you actually pick every note and treat it with the whammy or pick only the first of a melody-line and "produce" the rest with the whammy?

if the latter is the case - how would I do this?
