Vinyl to CD (How To Record)

I have been collecting Vinyl for many years and now have a collection of over 1,500 Lp's some not in the very best condition, but irriplaceable.
Can anyone suggest the best way to transfer them to CD's using modern techniques to remove the snap crackle and pop acumulated over the years.

Hi Vic
If you have a half way decent sound card with a line input and some recording/editing software such as SoundForge with the noise reduction plug ins it's easy. You'll need to use your stereo or a dedicated turn table RIAA pre amp (you can't just plug a turn table into a line input without one). More than likely the line input on most entry level sound cards have an 1/8" stereo mini input so you'll need a cable with two RCAs on one end and the stereo mini on the other. SoundForge will let you record and edit the tunes and there's a de-clicking/popping function (the noise reduction plug in) is pretty effective for cleaning up the hash. After you have them recorded and cleaned up you can burn a CD. Hope this helps. Good luck.

You can buy Sound Forge at almost any place that sells recording equipment supplies (e.g., http://www.bayviewproaudio.com).

Another program that will do exactly what you want to do is Spin Doctor. This is part of Adaptec's Easy CD Creator Deluxe package. If you got Easy CD Creator with your CD burner (many of them come with it) you "might" be able to upgrade to the Deluxe version relatively cheap. The basic version doesn't include Spin Doctor.

The physical setup is just as Track Rat descibed it and relatively easy.

It's a good move, since you can then pack away your vinyl for safekeeping and still get to enjoy the music.
