Hi all,

I recentely came to the constatation that there are still loads of great vinyl records available and heaps of interesting vinyl on second hand sale, but I have a problem: I don't have a turntable/pick up, whatever it is called in English:D, to play it. The problem is also I only have a line input in my hifi equipment, so I can't connect a normal one to that input.

Are there any turntables with build in preamp or do I have to buy one before I can actually buy the turntable?

thx for help.

Brett..

You need a Phono Stage Pre..

Then you can hook up a turntable.... You might find one cheap...

Most cheap receivers also have these built in....

But alot of stand alone power amps (yours?) requires an outboard pre for this..

I will do a search and try to come back with some links for you..

Phono

Yes, you need a phono preamp.

They -- like so many things -- are available at a range of price points. If you want one that's as good as the one in your stereo receiver would have been (if you had one in your stereo receiver), I don't think you'll wind up paying more than $50 or so, brand new. You can, of course, pay a lot more (orders of magnitude more), if you are so inclined. Whether that makes sense, given what you are trying to do and the other equipment you're using to do it with, is your call. I suspect not, but maybe that's just me.

Here's one:

Here's one that might be tad more expensive:

I really thought I was going to need some kind of preamp but I didn't know these kinda things existed

VIVA LA VINYL!!!!

so a few months ago a friend of my wife brought her new 'young' boyfriend to our house (he is 22)....

I had a few records (the vinyl variety) sitting out that I had been listening to recently....he looks at them and says 'what are those?'

I'm still trying to figure out if I'm really old (I'm only 32...), he's really young, or he's just sheltered and naive (this is the front runner) - c'mon, he didn't know what vinyl was???????????????

Watch out pratt.. he might soon pop up here as a newbie asking for your help.........

Check out the big English vocabulary on our Belgian friend. :D I don’t think I have ever uttered that word - and rarely have read it.

No shit. I consider myself to have a pretty good vocabulary but I've never even heard that one used. Not only that but he used it perfectly. At first I thought he meant to use 'consternation' but was using it wrong.

I bow to Brett, master of all things oral... err verbal.

My guess is that Brett is studying Law. Only lawyers use words like that.

I took on a huge project to transfer all my parents' records to cds. I bought a tiny $50 power amp, thinking I'd need the phono pre amp. Then I bought a cheap Sony record player at Circuit City for maybe $100 or less.

Turns out there's a switch on it so you can run it out at line level, so there are some consumer level players out there that have internal pre amps.

In the meantime, if you need a tiny $45 power amp...

I'd get the turntable before the amp just to be safe, unless you're going to want it audiophile standard.

:D:D:D
Nope, I'm not studying law, I'm studying Music Production in the conservatory in Ghent (a combination of music education and studiotechniques).

The fact is that I translated my Dutch a bit too literaly. Over here the expression 'I came to the constatation' is often used and I just hoped it excisted also in English:D

Btw, thx for the vinyl help!

I’m glad you’re doing something for humanity, rather than against it. :D:D:D

I understood exaactly what he ment with constatation. First I thought "Whats the deal? It's obvious what it means!" Then I realized that it's obvious to me only because Swedish has the verb "konstatera" which is usually translated to "establish" but really means "to find/realize/establish a constatation". :)

Languages are funny. Too bad I don't know more than I do.

hi regebro,

the same in Dutch, we have the verb 'constateren' which means the exact same as you explain.

One of my friends spend his holiday in Sweden this year, and although he didn't understand Swedish, he told me that he could find similarities between Swedish and Dutch while he was watching telivision shows that were English spoken and had Swedish subtitles. Both languages are Germanic, so we're kinda related:)

Hey, I thought I had a half-assed decent vocabulary also, but that word isn't even in my American Heritage soft dictionary and I don't have an un-abridged around the house - can any of you "eruditics" post an actual dictionary definition? Thanx -

Oh well, at least I'm still smarter than my next-door neighbor... (sigh) Steve

I also didn't find it in my English dictionary, so I guess it doesn't excist. Sorry for that, I'll try to use normal vocabulary next time:D

Not true. Here's the definition from dictionary.com:

an assumption that is basic to an argument

You were right on accident! Cool.

Erhmmmm... Did I say it was an accident, I mean I have really a profound vocabularyD:D:D:D

Well, at least I didn't humiliate myself, that's a relief:)

I recently built the RIAA Preamplifier from PAIA. It was a very easy build and works extremely well. It was very low cost, I believe $29.95. Check it out at www.PAIA.COM.
