Vintech Dual 72

i haven't used the vintech 1272 specifically, but i can tell you that any neve-type preamp is going to have a lot of colorization, but in a good way...from what i understand, the 1272 circuit is almost identical to the 1073(which absolutely rule), but with less gain and no EQ...

for $1200, i doubt you can do better

edit: that is, unless you're handy with a soldering iron, and get 2 channels of the N72 module from seventh circle audio
 
Ditto to what Ironklad said. Those Vintech units are great. Just keep in mind, I think you'll need the power supply as well.

An alternative would be the Great River ME-1NV. Great pre and also based on Neve.

Then there's API...can't really go wrong there.
 
The 1272 is similar in sound to the 1073 up to about 50dB of gain, then becomes very different. The 1272 is lacking a gain stage. I like the 1272 a lot though, and have never had to use more than half of its gain for things I record. Never tried the Vintech version, though.

I have this piece of gear. It's the best I've ever owned which isn't saying much about compairing it to some other high end pieces.

You will not need a power supply. For the price it's a real good deal. I think one is all you would want to use. I primarily got it for guitars. I read time and time again in reviews that this unit was great for a guitar sound. I am very pleased and will probably keep it unless I lose my job and have to sell it.

I have tried it on the drum OH's. Had some good results. It does have its own sound.

I found mine on ebay for 1000.00 used.

Wow... the Low Cover is so good.

Alot of people would never tell the difference, the guitars are so close.
 
Roybot, that is a really nice sound you've got there. Any photos of your setup?
 
Many thanks! No photos but it's pretty modest.

Low guitars = SX GG1 w/p-90's, Parts Strat with EMG's, MIM Jazz bass. Drums = Korg Triton.
Guitar amp = JCM 800 (2205).
Bass "amp" = Bass Pod.

I do highly recommend the Vintech Dual 72 but the only other pre I have to compare it to is an RNP.
 
Unlike all the other vintech models, the dual 72 does not need an external power supply, which is pretty cool. If you like on board EQ you might want to save up for a Vintech 273.
 
What would you estimate it adds to your sound, the usual 10% to 15% , or more ?

I would go as far to say that it characterizes the tone 35-50%. THat;s if your acustom to lower end transparent pre;s (like i was). You will definately hear the difference.

It's great on dynamic mics (57,421, D112, etc). I have to push the upper end on the gain for LDC's though. I don't think it would be a suitable pre for a ribbon mic.

Huh?? That a bit unusual...

...or are you micing guitar cabs with your dynamics and vocals with your LDCs

i doubt it would work as well - i think they top out between 45-50db gain, as they weren't originally intended to be used as a mic pre

a while back i ran some royer 121's into 1073's for drum room mics, and had to use up quite a few clicks on the gain knob...the 1272 might have enough gain for something like that, but probably not for vocals or soft instrumentation
