Well, newbie here. I've heard this plugin is good for adding a tape saturation sound to music. I was wondering if anyone had any good settings to use this for music from commercial cd's to add that sound to them. Newbie here to all this so could use any help. Thanks in advance.

I don't think that's a very good use for that particular plugin.

.

Hmm

Well, if that isn't a good use any recommendations for plugins that will work for this?

If you want it to sound like tape, then run it out to a tape machine.

.

Well

Hmm, any good plugin alternatives. Don't have a tape reel so that isn't an option.

The vintage warmer does not really make a tape type sound.
It's more of a vintage tube compressor sound, with lots of coloration.

Really?

I've heard from plenty of places that it is great for tape saturation and compression quality's. The plugin manual says it does emulate saturation. Hmm, well if this doesn't give it that sound than any recommendations on what plugin will? Thanks.

The vintage warmer does saturate... quite nicely especially for a plugin. It's just not like tape saturation. Try it and see what you think.
As for other plugins that sound like tape saturation? I'm not sure.

Thanks

Thanks for the info tarnation, any good settings you recommend for commercial cd music? Will it work with that kind, adding a bit of pleasant saturation? Thanks.

im going to assume were talking about the PSP vintage warmer?

if so.. this is my number 1 super special plugin...

i use it on almost every song (as the fianl master out) - with its EQ's and overdrive capabilities... it makes it really easy to saturate and set good high volume levels...

also lately i've found that it can give a good edge to some ind. tracks (punk vox, snare)
..
theres my 2c

chessrock is right though...
if you really want tape saturation, get a good 4 head 2 track machine (Otari or better) and use it as a send from your digi setup..

I take back what I said.

The Vinatage Warmer is, first and foremost, a compressor / limiter.

And when you consider that most comercial music doesn't have nearly enough compression and limiting applied to it already ... it would only make sense to add even more if you have the opportunity ! ! So I think it's a great idea. [/sarcasm]

.

Well, since most of you think getting a tape maching would be alot better, I was wondering how expensive it could get to do that (buying the machine, alignment, repairs, etc.). Would I get the same effects using cassettes? Thanks

Invasor: for the tape emulation, try the MCdsp plugins, for Pro Tools only, for VST is the Magneto plugin which emulates the Tape Saturation

Hmm, magneto. Any idea where I can get this plugin? I heard that it is no longer available. Will it work with commercial cd music?

you could do like metalhead said before "cross stich some mic mittens to cover your mics to warm up the sound".

Well, haven't really recorded anything, just needed help with something for commercial cd's that will give em that tape sound to them.

Oh, that one. I though you meant spectral designs magneto, my mistake. I'll try it out and see.

VW is a compressor/limiter with tape saturation features. You can drive the saturation as much or as little as you would like. Whether the saturation sounds like an actual tape machine saturating is open for debate, but VW will give you a saturation effect.

There's a free demo download of VW, so you should just get that and see if you like what it does.

I own VW, it's an excellent plugin. I personally wouldn't want to hassle with an actual tape machine either, but then again I don't use VW for it's tape saturation features.
