Does anyone have any tips on how to not waste a ton of strings with these things? My "Deluxe Players" Strat came with them and when I tried to restring it I wasted 3 high "E" strings because they kept popping out. Then in the middle of practicing today my B string came out and I wasted my last two and still didn't get it. I HATE these things, but strings are cheaper than new tuners so I thought I'd see if anyone had any thoughts on them. Thanks guys.

I have two American Vintage 62's with Kluson Vintage machine heads and I don't have any problems with strings popping out. You could try heading over to the Fender Forum. It's friendly and there is more traffic over there than here. It's bad here.

I'm not blaming my "tools." I'm asking for help in my deficiencies. Thank you for the Youtube links. I guess I searched the wrong thing.

I have a real vintage Strat and I've never had a string pop out that was installed correctly. The way I do it is to cut the string with a right angle bend about 3/4" from the end and enough string for it to go around the post twice for the low E and a bit more for the higher strings. Stick the end down the hole in the middle of the tuner and wind it up.

ya, it should work fine, you must not bre putting enough string down the whole or something

I thought Gotoh was Japanese?

Yes they are. Search "Hosco guitar parts" if you want full details. Not all the parts are made there however.

With how cheap the Gotoh pegs are these days (typically $35), my guess is still China. Compare this to $60 for Schaller mini's, or Grover Rotomatics. Sort of like the Celestion Seventy 80 for $80 or the G12H Heritage for $220. One is made in China, and the other in England. This is right from the Celestion web site or their catalogs. Gotoh ain't braggin' where they're made, so who really knows.
Hey, you really wanna see something that'll put the China/USA thing in a whole new light (at least for me)? http://www.studioreviews.com/m16-460.htm Have a clean diaper handy.

I couldn't find a really good tutorial, but THIS isn't too bad.

Basically, your string should go down the hole in the tuner, and then bend it 90 degrees, and wrap it around the shaft 2-4 times. There is absolutely no reason your tuners should work just fine.

they are the greatest. I hate tuners with the hole through the middle now.

I cut the low e-string off at the D-tuner (the A at the G, etc) and it has just enough length to wrap around twice. For the high E, I leave it a little longer and go one wrap over where the string comes out and the rest under.

Once you see how cool it is to string up split post tuners correctly, you'll feel so stupid for posting this. :D

See? the strings go down into the middle of the post.
