Recently I recorded a band, and it was a joint effort with another guy. He brought along a vintage Shure mic, maybe from the 60s or 70s, and we used it on the snare drum. I wish I could remember the model, but it sounded great! Well I'm thinking about buying some vintage microphones to use on certain types of bands that I record because sometimes I want like an Elliott Smith sounding recording. Does anyone reccomend any particular microphones for me to look for. Preferably mics that aren't going to cost a lot of money.

Shure 565SD (Unisphere I) would probably sound good on that. It's a semi-bright dynamic that can take pretty serious SPLs without problems. It's like an SM58, but IMHO, it's less muddy sounding....

Sweet I'll check it out, I'm in search for the perfect snare mic because the 57 always sound so dull when I mic the snare with it.

elliot smith didnt use vintage gear. he used a bottom shelf 4 track and some bad dynamic mics. He spent his money on Heroin.

If it looks like this, it's a 545 (Unidyne III). A VERY usefull mic.

You mean my old Unidyne III is vintage? Cool.
I don't think much of it but it is handy to carry as a spare to gigs because it's high impedence. Mine's wired with a female 1/4" jack at the end so I can plug it into my wireless guitar transmitter when some turkey has to speak at corporate functions cause I use a headset.
