To Infinity..and Beyond!!
I was driving with my wife today and she says "Stop at this garage sale" I immediately went into groaning mode. The last thing I want to do is look at 25 cent clothes. I did find a box of what looked to be some old junk mic cables and etc. In this box was a yellow EV box which peaked my curiosity. I opened the box and in it are 2 - EV 676's, 1 - EV 660 and 1 - EV 627. The price for the whole box cables, mics, etc. was $5. "Can't pass up a sale dear!!" I brought everything home the cables for the 676's were in the box, and the other two had regular XLR connectors. I tried them all out and they all work perfectly!! I really don't know if they are good for anything, but the 676's and the 660 sound nice and warm and hey I only spent 5 bucks. I could piss away 5 bucks in a minute at any other store so I figure it's a good investment even if they work good for one song for some weird track. I am wondering if the 676's might work as OH's? Anybody with any information on any of these mics please post. Have an ordinary day!!!! Thank You

AYE CARUMBA you lucky, jammy B*****D

I havn't used those particular mics BUT I love EV mics & am currently looking for an RE20 for a negative amount of cost

I use a PL80, PL88 & a PL95

lucky fellow

I have a RE-20. It is currently at Telex being refurbished. It's costing me $200, but it's gonna be woth it. They great all around mics. Vocals, Kick drum, you name it. I can't wait to get it back. I also have a PL95, but haven'y been able to find it since we moved. I KNOW it's here somewhere. Thanks a lot Slidey!!

I recently used the PL95 along with a neumann KMS105 on a guitar cab

using the ev for overdrive & the KMS for clean & sometimes a mix of the 2 was nice for my lead sound................I love EV mics

but the RE20 I noticed new for £499 the other day although they can be got for around £250

Are your 676's the ones with the harmonica looking port along the body? that port was to eliminate proximity effect.

Yes they are the ones with the harmonica looking port along the side. I was actually surprised how good they sound. I haven't really done much with them, but they sounded pretty good just plugging them in the first time. I'll experiment with them later.

I have a 660 and its great. It is good for a guitar cabinet. I have compared it side-by to my re10 and I would guess that it is a direct ancestor of the re10,11,15,16,18. It is a little warmer, less hi-fi than the re10, but still very pleasing. I would use it anywhere where a 57 seems too piercing or harsh or you want a slightly lower-fi vibe. I love the look of those 676's. They look like the barrels of space pistols.

Thanks for the offer but.......NAH!!....I don't think so. I'll wait. If they don't work out I can always turn them into toy space guns :D :D :D

Those are some cool looking mics. You could use those as props in a low budget space movie.

The EV 676 was my first ever microphone purchased used from Bath Music (Guitar City) in Brooklyn NY. I used it for vocals on many many early gigs. Until it fell straight down on the cartridge screen when someone knocked over the stand. Didn't work after that. Got it repaired and used it again for several years until, once again, someone -- this time a drunk at the Tomorrow's Inn Bar and Grill -- knocked the stand over. I miss that mic!

you'll need to speak up boys... thety're 4 yrs behind us...

Dont you hate when you read through a thread and realize somebody doing a search woke up a thread that has been dead for 4 years...dont they realise there is a big chance the OP is dead already and wont be reading this?

What I hate even more is when I get sucked into relying to it coz I did not notice.

Sigh!

With EV's that doesn't matter... age shall never weary them.

Here's my collection...

Electro-VoiceRE200.jpg

RE200 Cardiod Condenser - still in production. Great on hats, good on overheads and very surprising on vocals.

Electro-VoiceRE10.jpg

RE10 Supercardiod dynamic. Still in production as the RE16. Nice vocals dynamic.

Electro-VoiceRE11.jpg

RE11 Supercardiod dynamic. Great on guitar cabbies.

Electro-VoiceEV676.jpg

EV 676. The "Jim Morrison" mike. A cardiod dynamic. Stick it in front of a Fender Twin with Strat or a Tele and it'll probably remind you of lots of stuff you've heard somewhere in the past. I got two cheap from a junk shop in New Orleans but one of them had sunk by the look of it. It didn't work.

Electro-VoicePL6.jpg

PL6. Same as a 660. Another supercardiod dynamic. I use this as my first choice for miking up bass cabinets. It can also be good in a kick if you want that old school sound. Same capsule as the RE20 I believe. I've got a pair.

Electro-Voice951.jpg

EV 951. A crystal cardiod that I bought last month off eBay for fifty bucks for harp miking. This one was made in 1966 and turned out to be unused, new in box. All I need to find now is a 3c stamp and I can send in the warranty form.

I'm a real fan of these old Buchanan era EV's. The dynamics I have are all what they call 'Variable D' mikes and don't exhibit proximity effects. That's what the grill running down their spine does. There's still plenty of them around on eBay and Craigslist. They're always my first choices when it comes to miking up cabinets & it's a toss up between the RE10 and the Beyers I have (M69, M88 & M610) if I want a dynamic for vocals.

And they all look great, especially the 676 and that 951.

:)

Wow! I remember reading this post shortly after I signed up for the board. It set me off on a 4 year mission of combing yard sales / pawn shops / ebay looking for mics (especially EV ones)!

Almost looks like my Shure 535...which is a legendary harp mic used by Little Walter...and I swear I saw video of little MJ using 2 of them taped together.

Ev 676

If you got a pair of EV 676 mics, in good condition for the price you stated, you are one lucky sob. Many studios recorded a lot of hits using these mics. Don't under estimate these old jewels. I have 2 of them myself.
