I think Vinnie Paul has one of the most distinct and unique drum sounds around right now. Naturally, I want to rip it off.

Any suggestions on how to get that real solid kick drum sound? That's the part that's tripping me up. Everything I try either sounds too thin to just dead.

I think vinnie paul still uses remo pinstripes on his toms.

On the kick, he uses a danmar plastic pad and a wooden drum beater. The toms and the kick drum are heavily scooped between 315 and 400. Also, to get that flabbyness he has in his kick drum sound, the resonant head is only finger tight.

What was described above is about half of it. Vinnie has the May system (internal mics) in the toms. He also uses a ddrum and triggers to beef up the sound. It's about a 60%-40% mix favoring the triggers. It's really kind of cool that he can call up the exact sounds that were used on the different albums when he plays live.
Give me acouple of days to look into this and I will find out exactly what he is doing now. (my info is from the Pantera days, he might have changed something)
BTW I don't think he uses Danmar pads, he gets the click from the triggered sound.

The thing that I did leave out was that he makes his own samples. He makes new ones for every album. They are similar, but if you really listen, they are different. He tends to favor sennheiser 421's on the toms (and sometimes the kick) but he tunes a tom within an inch of his life and samples it, puts that one away and does the same thing to the next one, and so on. He says he uses the triggers for consistancy (most metal bands use triggers live) and still mics the kit in case the triggers fail.
On a CD you hear the combination of live internal mics plus the triggers which were made from the internal mikes and external ones (and a crap-load of processing)
Vinnie and Darrels father owned a studio. They had access to the equipment (and knowlege) needed to pull this off from the beginning.
