HI

i recently got some advice from some people on here in relation to what device is best for Firewire recording, after considertion i decided i was going with the Motu 828 based on recommendations, however that was until i was in a recording studio today and the engineer was showing me the Protools Digi002 (mixer unit not rack) which he was using to record some band the day before.... im now confused also as it seems that Pro Tools (as many people agree) is the pro choice for studios which is where im trying to get. Based on this would i be better to get the Digi002 rack with ProTools LE or the Motu? my new PowerBook G4 maxed out with all options from the apple store is on its way :) so i wanna make the right decision now thinking ahead.

Can people give there thoughts on the 2 units, the pros and cons and thoughts on what best DAW i could use on the Mac for the 828 MKII?

Right now im preferring on the digi002 as i would like to get more knowledge on the Pro Tools suite and plug ins to help my career. Up til this point my only recording has been using a digital 8 track machine and occasionally Cool Edit pro (dont laugh)

Thanks in advance for any advice, always appreciate your help!

I've never worked on motu, my job is on Pro tools using HD accel systems, so this is my two cents from the Protools side of the coin:

Currently, Pro Tools is the standard among the industry. If offically or unofficially, I don't know; but I personally wouldn't want to be a musician at any type of studio without it. And for good reason.

The reasons could be anywhere from the design of the hardware itself to the deals Pro tools execs strike between major companies.

The edge pro tools has over many other interfaces is that you get more than you pay for. This is especially true of the software itself. If you become skilled at Pro Tools LE software, you've aready gained valuble experience that carries on into higher end versions of Pro Tools; the one the big leaguers use. In fact, Pro Tools LE has 90% of the features Pro Tools TDM has. Knowing these things in and out will definitly make you an asset in the industry. Pro tools is not hard to learn at all.

Another benefit is malliability. With pro tools software at home, you could record your project at home, take it to a pro tools equiped studio and have it processed there with no hassels or set backs. So it saves the studio time, it saves you money, it makes everyone happy.

It's all about keeping up to date with whats wanted. So if tommorow MOTU becomes the standard, you bet your ass I'd learn that too, just to keep that edge. All engineers should think that way.

My two cents.

Lets comparestats here

Motu
- Eight balanced TRS analog ins/outs
- ADAT optical I/O (8 channels)
- 2 Mic Pres with inserts
- S/PDIF I/O

Digi 002
- Has a controller
- 8 analog inputs, 8 analog outputs
- 4 mic pres w/ inserts
- ADAT optical I/O (8 channels)
- S/PDIF I/O

Theirs more to compare but I just did the basics. For a Mac DAW I would think Logic would be the best program. One of the things you have to look at is that when you go pro tools thats all you can use...pro tools. If you go with the Motu with cubase to start out you could always goto logic or anything else but pro tools.

again...another misconception about Pro Tools.
a small list of what Pro Tools hardware (002 in this example) also works with besides just pro tools:

Ableton Live 3.0.x
Apple DVD Player v4.0
Apple FinalCut Pro v4.5
Apple Garage Band 1.1
Apple iTunes 4.5
Apple QuickTime 6.5.2
Bias Peak v4.1
Celemony Melodyne v2.5
Emagic Logic Audio Pro 6.4.1
Mark of the Unicorn Digital Performer 4.1.2
Native Instruments FM 7 v1.1.2
Native Instruments Absynth 2.0.4
Propellerhead Reason Adapted
Propellerhead Reason v2.5
Propellerhead ReCycle v2.1
RealOne v9.0
Roxio Jam v6.0
Roxio Toast v6.0
Steinberg Cubase SX v1.0.52
WMPlayer v7.1.3

And that's just OSX programs. There are more for the PC.
Also, Pro Tools 6.4 works great on Mac, much more editing options than Logic IMO

So somebody could control Nuendo(you list cubase which nuendo pretty much is) with the Digi002 and Pro Tools is Better then Logic on Mac? This is news to me!

i didn't say pro tools is better than logic on the mac...it's all personal opinion. i just didn't want anyone thinking that logic is the only DAW software program you should go with on Mac. 'Cause Pro Tools, Digital Performer, and other work just as well. In my opinion, Pro Tools has better/more editing options than Logic has.
002 works with Nuendo on PC I know that for sure...so I'm assuming it's the same for Mac. As long as Nuendo works with Core Audio drivers.
