I don't know of any to stay away from related to recording. But as far as the components in your computer system, I would avoid using any low quality, generic components, especially the motherboard. Check to see if there are any known issues/incompatabilities with the video card your thinking of buying, with the software and hardware in the rest of the system.
I'm using a Diamond V770 for video, but there are many others that I doubt would give you a problem: Any of the ATI cards or Diamond. Cards based on S3's chipsets I've found to be ok. Only possible ones I would avoid would be video cards based on trident chipsets and/or cirrus logic chipsets.
