I'm working on building a computer now with and Athlon XP 1500 processor and probably an ECS K7S5A motherboard. This computer is going to be part of my rack and only used for recording. What I'm wondering is there any good cheap video card that I can get that doesn't use up too much system resources.? I believe this Mobo had 4 MB AGP slot. I'm going to be using this system with my MOTU 828. I've been using the MOTU 828 with my laptop and its great but have been limited in tracks by the laptops hard drive speed.

Hmm, if the motherboard has integrated video (which I don't recommend) then you might as well use it. Otherwise, tons of people have cheap nVidia based cards (TNT, TNT2, Vanta, etc) that go for about $30-50 and seem to work just great.

Yes, K7S5A has quad speed AGP slot.
My strong advice: to avoid video card interfering with the whole PCI bus, which may result in cracles and static in recording, DO NOT use PCI card.
Get yourself an AGP card based on SIS 315 chipset. They usually have 64 MB memory and 4 x AGP speed. They may be manufactured by ECS or somebody else, which does not really matter. Not for hardcore gamers, but very good for our purposes. You can get it for about $35 - 40 at Ebay. Sometimes, you can even find a modification of this card with dual monitor control, which is very nice if you want to run two monitors. They usually have 128 mb memory, will cost closer to $50 - 60.

Thanks for the info. I'll definately go with the AGP card.

Oh you have an AGP *slot*. You must've meant "4X", not "4MB". Yes, get an AGP card for sure.

I would also put in a word for the ATI Rage cards. Although the Radeon is their newer, high perfomance 3D chipset, they still sell video cards based on the Rage chipset for about $35. We have several hundred Rage cards deployed where I work, as well as some older Trident cards, and for basic 2D windows work they are just fine.
