on my wifes cheapy E-Machines, with onboard sound and video....$399 and flawless performance for 3 1/2 years and now this....

symptoms:
when it boots up, i get no video until it gets to the part to put in the Windows password.......then the video comes up fine....

after a while the screen will just go black...after a few seconds, sometimes it comes right back up....sometimes it doesnt......after it goes i can turn the monitor off and right back on and it will be back on......when it gets bad it wont stay back on for more than 5-10 seconds.....its been going fine all morning so far.....

it has the newset drivers ATI has at its website (ATI Rage Pro AGP 2x) and the newest version of DirectX that the driver needs.....

next time while its acting up Im gonna switch another monitor onto it to see if its the monitor......

i am just assuming its the video card but i am far from an expert into these matters.....just looking for a few other suggestions as to what else might be causing this.....

If turning the monitor off/on fixes it, I would lean towards the monitor.

Could be the video card (or onboard video I guess) certainly...but first toss the monitor from your computer on there and see if you have the same problem.
