I am looking for a video card to set up a dual monitor system with W2k. My current video card is onboard, so if I understand the Microsoft documentation correctly I need a PCI (no AGP slot) card that I can disable VGA using jumpers. Can someone recommend a video card that will do this? Also I cannot disable the onboard video so I don't beleive I want a dual card (but open to the idea).

ATI still makes a PCI video card based on its older RAGE chipset. You should be able to find one for $30-40.

You should be able to disable the on-board video through the BIOS. If you want a dual head card, basically any Matrox card is gonna be better than anything else. The G450 can be had for around $75 and will you give the best 2D quality of any video card less than $1,000.

This came up in a post over at Audioforums.com

ATI cards with the Rage chipset sometimes don't like being the secondary card.

If you want a dual-monitor setup, and aren't interested in playing games, there is one word for you: MATROX.

I'm not sure the model of the MB but the system is a HP Netserver LC2000. I can not disable the onboard video within the BIOS but if I plug another video card in it takes over automatically so I'm thinking a dual card is probably going to be the best way to go.

Does anyone know if all programs are compatible with dual monitors? Is it the kind of thing where a program would have to be compatible?

yea ur proggie has to suppor dual monitor

Are those ati's compat wit win2k?

I don't think the app has to necessarily support dual monitors. If it has windows that can be undocked, they should always be able to be moved to the second monitor.

I have read some documentation regarding games having issues with dual monitors. Also Sonar is setup with the ability to save layouts, which gives you a little more dual monitor functionality.

The issues I've seen with games not working is when you try to play the game on your secondary monitor. Another thing if you're planning on playing games is that usually the two monitor outpus share bandwidth, so it would make sense to disable the secondary monitor during gameplay.

Dual monitors

I have two 21" monitors running Cubase and guess what?
I only use 1 almost all the time...
Get ur videocard but be careful what u wish for.. It might collect dust someday.

I think you could say that about almost anything. I have a kick drum mic that I have yet to use, even though I've had it for 9 months.
