I'm planning on upgrading from my vf80 to a vf160 model. Is the vf160ex worth the extra cash vs. a used 160?

I know the hard drive is twice the size, anything else to make it worth the extra hundred or so (used)?

The best price I can find new is $699, worth it over a used 160 at around $400 or so?

Thanks much!

Technically speaking they're about the same. It would be cheaper to get a vf160 and upgrade the harddisk. BTW, i got my vf160 with a 40GB drive (same as present vf160EX??).

Also, with the 160 you get a SCSI connector, which may be useful, under certain circumstances.
(Then again - it might not).
With either model make sure you get a built-in CD burner.
(In some parts of the world the burner is an optional extra).

Thanks for the replies, I'm tempted to get the ex, as the software will be the newest version, plus aren't the effects improved as well? I have seen some vf160s with a larger hard drive upgrade on ebay.

You can download SW upgrades for the VF16 and VF160 from fostex to bring them up to the latest version.

Cool, thanks timboZ. So I'm thinking a used vf160, esp. with a larger hard drive, would be a better value?

For whatever it's worth, another consideration is the warranty. God forbid that something should go wrong, and almost three years later my Fostex is still working as designed. However, should something go wrong--at least with a brand new VF160ex unit, you'd have warranty coverage, something you wouldn't have with a used unit.

I now have 2 VF160's
I just picked up my second VF160 with 40gb hd, closed back headphones, and some edirol speakers for $350.

Personally, I love my vf160ex. The warranty point is a good one as well. Mine runs like a champ but you never know.

be even more of a badass and buy the vf16. the sam ash by me still has one of these brand new on "clearance" for $799, i got it on ebay for $200.

Unless I knew exactly how the VF160 was treated, I'd probably go for a new EX version.

It's so inexpensive. Why not just start out fresh?
