VF160 software upgrades

I noticed on the Fostex site I can upgrade my system software for the vf160 to version 1.13.

However, in true fostex manual style it doesn't say WHY i would want to do that.

So can anyone say what noticeable benefits I'd gain through upgrading?
 
Actually, http://www.vf16.com/ , already has Ver 1.15. :cool: Mine came with Ver 1.14 in Jan.

Watch when you are booting up the VF160 and it will tell which version of the sofware you have. I have had no issues with mine so, I don't see the point in upgrading just to upgrade the software.

I assumed that later versions of the software would fix known problems or even add some new options. But it doesn't seem to be explained anywhere. At least Microsoft say WHY a new patch fix has been relelased!

Like you, I have no burning issues with the vf160, so I won't bother upgrading and risk toasting my machine, unless someone can point out the advantages.
 
'toasting your machine' isn't a risk. if it is as easy as the mr8 is to update, there's really no reason not to upgrade. I am one of those guys that always has the newest edition of everything (especially if it cost nothing to get the newest edition) though so that might be just my opinion.
 
The updates on the VF machines are a breeze,quick and painless.:)

Don't laugh ...v1.01 !

The machine is only aobut 14 months old, maybe it was in storage at the retailers for a spell.

OK, you've convinced me to upgrade.
 
Upgrade?

Excuse my stupidity but I have a VF160 that I bought 1 1/2 years ago. It seems to work great. I'm afraid to make any changes, like upgrading to a new version because I'm afraid it may mess something up. Question......what benefit is there in upgrading and how is it done? Thanks for any replies I may get for what may seem to be a DUH question.

upgrading to newer software

I've been wrestling with the same question as discussed here.

One benefit of upgrading from v 1.01 (which I have) is that you can use the internal burner to save programs as .WAV files (assuming you have the internal burner). That would allow you to archive your audio data and/or use the .WAV files for mixing/mastering on a PC.

Initially I thought the only way to do this was via an external SCSI drive (this is what the manual suggests), but emails with Fostex support clarified this for me. Note: if you have an external SCSI drive, you can save programs as .WAV files -- but only if you have version 1.13 or higher (I believe).

Bottom line: if you want to save any programs as .WAV files and have version 1.01, you'll have to upgrade your software.

I am also a bit hesitant to do this, but am glad to hear from Kramer that they go smoothly.

Is saving to WAV file the only benefit? If so, I may not need to upgrade because I don't transfer anything to computer. I save my scene memory mix to internal CD then bring it back when needed.

Yes I have the internal burner.

Yes, saving as a WAV would be very useful for transfer to PC when I come to master my stuff in Soundforge (actualy more like Normalise!).

OK I'm going to upgrade.

Whats the procedure?

If you have v1.01, the upgrade process to 1.13 or later is worth all the aggravation. Save some time---Go to

and read through the upgrade section.

Read the upgrade section?

There doesn't appear to be any text to read in that section, just a list of downloads - or am I missing something obvious (quite possibly!)?
 
Version 1.14 or 1.15

When my VF160 turns on it shows version 1.15 on screen, but when I look up the software version via the setup function it says I have 1.14... So, which do I have?
 
glynb: My thoughts exactly!!......that's why I updated your last post in this regard....and it doesn't say anything about updating in the manual (LOVE that manual) either!

billisa: My VF-160 says the same, when it's fired up, but I haven't checked it in the setup mode....interesting......

P.S.: Just to echo the previous posts, upgrading (from 1.01 to 1.13, then to 1.15, has not harmed/altered any work saved on the hard drive. Once you get above version 1.10, upgrading from the CD drive is really painless and quick.
 
Paj: Just read your ezboard post.....what advantages were there when updating from 1.14 to 1.15?
 
I believe, and could be wrong, but I believe the upgrade 1.15 may make it easier to loop a sample, plus I believe it may allow you to play programs in succession... I'm not aware that the versions 1.14/1.15 fixed anything...

Also, the version listed at start-up is the one running. If you see a different version while checking the HD in setup, that's just telling you what version was in use when the HD was first formatted...

I also think you can get a manual appendix printout for the new versions on the Japanese site. Problem? It's in, Japanese. But really, how much more difficult is the Japanese than what the manual has in English?
 
Oh, and by the way, on the Japanese site, they appear to be listing version 2.01 for the VF160... Will someone contact Matt @ Fostex USA to see if he knows what a) this new version is for and b) if Fostex will please make an English version manual addendum for any and all upgrades listing whatever features they enable.
