Hi all -

I'm planning on buying a VF16/VF160 for use on stage with my band, to mix in additional pre-recorded electronic drumtracks etc - but I have a few questions which don't seem to be answered in the reviews I've read. Could anyone help me out?

1) There are 2 internal FX processors and 2 external sends. Does this mean that adding two external FX boxes would give you a total of four effects per channel, or do you have to choose *either* internal FX processors *or* external sends?

2) Is there any set arrangement of the 16 tracks into mono / stereo pairs ?

3) Is it possible to start playback remotely - e.g. via the footswitch or via MIDI?

4) Is it possible to skip to markers during playback (i.e. "Let's cut to the chorus now") ?

5) Can you assign different tracks to the headphone output than to the main stereo outs (i.e. for sending a click track to the drummer) ?

6) Does any signal come out of the two insert sockets during playback?

Thanks very much -

vf-16

ok first of all there is only 1 aux send jack just to u know. There are 2 send adjustment menus so that u can use 2 effects, but not at the same time. its a trs jack so u have to use a Y cable. although i have not tried it yet, i am pretty sure u can use aux effects and the built in a.s.p. effects system together. When u do a channel view on the vf-16 it shows you current levels of effect 1, effect 2, aux 1, aux 2, so i am guessing all four can be used together. There is an optional footswitch jack for pumching with the fostex 8051 footswitch.
- there are multiple memory points u can set in the vf-16 to jump around in the song (e.g. jumping to the chorus )
-there is a seperate monitor out section, but i am not sure if it will record also. i would think not.
thats about all i know . good luck

aux send(s)

If I understand correctly there are TWO aux sends... they both come from one stereo 1/4" jack. The tip and middle each being an aux send... the barrel being ground... ( Lame. I know ... 2 1/4" mono jacks sounds better to me).

There are NO returns... you need your returns to come back into tracks. ... If I read things wrong, please correct me... I'm a newbie myself and am learning everyday, Thanks all for your posts which have been my instruction ... and a whole lot more educational than any book or manuel . Jim

fostex

u actually are right jim. it is 1 trs 1/4" jack for 2 sends. There is another way u can use the 2 insert jacks for effects but i am not sure how they work

I emailed Fostex's UK distributor about this stuff - & got a pretty decent reply.
Thought I'd post the info, in case it's of use to anyone else -

1) The internal FX and the external sends *can* both be used at the same time.

2) All 16 tracks are freely configurable into mono or stereo-pairs.

3) Starting playback remotely requires MMC (MIDI Machine Code) to be sent to the MIDI In socket (or a sync signal from an external sequencer)

4) You can't skip to song position markers during playback - the machine has to be in "Stop" mode first.

5) You can't assign a different mix to the headphone outs than to the main stereo outs.

6) No signal comes out of the two insert sockets during playback.

To use the inserts, plug the TRS jack of a "Y" cable into the insert on the VF16, connect one plug each to the in and out of one channel on your effect processor, do the same for the second insert.

this is the same prinicple as the inserts on a mixing console.

to insert of VF16

repeat this with another Y cable for insert 2, and the right channel of the effect
