Ahhggg...(VF-160 guys)

I have arecording project in 2 days and I am befuddled on 2 accounts. They are seemingly easy questions but the owners manual isn't so forgiving...

Here's the scenario...all recording will be done by individual musicians recording to a "scratch track" with metronome.
drums first, bass, 2 or 3 guitars, 2-4 vocal tracks.

Very simple & straight forward.

Question #1: Should I go the "direct mode" or should I go the "buss mode."?

Question #2: I will be recording drums first. The kit has 4
mic's (snare, kick, L overhang, R overhang). Should I use an outboard Mackie Mixing board to send the mic's into first in order to ensure a quality EQ? or is the VF-16 good enough to handle the lower dynamic frequencies of the kick etc?

Question #3: Ummm..how do I save songs? (please don't laugh but)...when I hit the "STOP" button after recording the scratch track after song #1, how do I let the VF-16 know that I'll be doing another song?

Geepers...sounds so elementary but help an analoge brother out please! :o

Don't have time right now to answer all... I'd go direct into the VF160, using Direct Record. I never use BUSS record.

The VF160 saves as you go (like a tape machine in a way). To start a whole new song you have to open a whole new program. To just lay down more tracks, just arm the tracks you want to fill and have at it. Previous stuff will remain.

The only problem I had with the manual was that it didn't cover virtual tracks(just mentions them), but since I never use them it doesn't matter. On to your questions:
1) Direct. Record your drums on 4 tracks to 5,6,7,8 using inputs E,F,G,H(you will need to use 7,8[G,H] for the phantom power if you are using condensers for your overheads.don't forget to turn phantom power on in SETUP) and "track exchange" them to tracks 9,10,11,12 freeing up 5,6,7,8 to do other stuff.
2) The low EQ is a 400Hz shelf. Who knows why they did that? Not me, but it sucks. I've been able to get some pretty punchy kick sounds by bumping the LOW EQ +2 on my 2 track stereo drum tracks.
3)The VF160 auto-saves constanly. You don't need to tell it to save. Kick ass feature.
Press the PGM SEL button(1st row under the display) and turn the jog wheel until the display flashes "NEW PROGRAM?" then press YES/ENTER. You then set up the new program.
