hi

spending two days in the newbies section has driven me here, cause everyone is saying the fostex VF-16 is a great thing. Anyone who can share there experience with me?
Then another thing, I've read extensively about the vf-16 being able to transfer to a PC but one thing still is unclear: can it or can it not send data in wave format?
if it can't why would i want it then?

Yes, if you go to setup and then save on the VF-16, you can save to a SCSI backup drive in wav format and then, transfer it to the PC.

i actually had read the link twist put up there but i thought a scsi drive could be the harddisk of a computer, please explain this detail.

now i'm wondering about this: a lot of people said in your bbs that they recorded on the fostex and edited in the pc.
maybe this sounds stupid but isn't that the same as recording on one fostex and mixing on another?
iow: if you edit on a computer, why not record on it? if you have it already it would be a lot cheaper.

I can only speak for myself as to the reason for going with a stand-alone recorder: I'm "old school" and still like the idea of having real faders to play with. Plus it's a more familiar format with a lot less of a learning curve.

I looked into pc recording but the one thing that stood out as a minus is having to use the mouse for panning and faders. For the most part I don't have to but if I needed to move more than one fader/pan knob at the same time I don't think I'd be quick enough with the mouse (during the final mix down session).

I think what most VF-16 users are referring to in regard to editing on the pc is when they're doing the final mastering process. There definitely are things you can do mastering wise on the pc that [I think] can't be done on most stand-alone digital recorders. However, for my own purposes I will most likely make a master mix straight from the VF-16 to a CD burner (I have a Philips CDR775 [dual tray]).

Those are my reasons. You'll need to ask the others for theirs. I'm sure you'll get a lot of good info from the group.

When you say "SCSI backup drive" do you mean like a Jazz or Zip drive? Then do you hook the same Jazz or Zip up to your computer to read the wave files? If so, what software do you use,just windows media player? And why cant you just go from the SCSI out of the VF-16 to the SCSI in on your computer to transfer the wave files? Why the extra step in between?

Yup, I use an Orb drive with the 2.2 Gig disks. But, you have to have a separate disk that is DOS formatted, not the one you use to backup the Fostex files that use the fostex format.
The VF16 can format either way..........

And what are the implications of saving to external drive, then transferring to computer via SCSI, as opposed to using S/PDIF through a sound card. Is there some form of data compression or other factor(s) that would make one method superior to the other?
