Having a great deal of trouble with the VF-16 S/P DIF Optical Out, as related to transferring tracks into my PC multutracking software (Cakewalk Pro Audio 9) via my new PCI Interface, Echo Audio GINA 24. The ADAT system is working fine, but S/P DIF Digital Out is causing a serious overload with the GINA.

First, my connections are as follows:

VF-16: Selected S/P DIF as Digital Out. Toslink Optical cable attached to Digital/Data Out.

GINA 24: Digital Mode Switch set to S/P DIF Optical. Toslink Optical cable attached to Optical In.

Regardless of where the gain controls are set on either device (+4db, -10db...even with no signal present, i.e., gains on both machines all the way down), I experience a loud, scratchy buzz; & the input meters are pegged. I know both of these hardware peices are pro audio caliber, should interface easily; & that this problem has to have a logical solution...but I sure can't seem to figure it out right now. Can anyone with any knowledge of one or both of these systems please help out. Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,

Mark Forman

Just a thought. one your windows mixer turn on the spdif voulme all the way up in the play areas and the recording areas.... then play something on the fostex and you should here it in your computers speakers. You can mute or turn other vols down if you want, but leave the master fader with some volume. If all is working well you might be able to choose the windows mixer in GINA's software.

If you don't see a SPDIF in on your windows mixer play control then choose properties and add it to be recognized and this might work.

God bless you ! Jim

Jim,

Can't open the Windows Mixer. Somehow, GINA 24 sent it away. Trying to figure out how to get it back now. Thanks.

Sounds to me like your data rates do not match. The Fostex is 44.1 16 - Be sure the program receiving the data is set the same.

Phil,

Tech Support at Echo Audio said basically the same thing (they were talking about locking the sample rate at 44.1 Khz in the GINA 24 Console.) Haven't had a chance to try that, but will soon. Thanks much.
