Hello. I dont have any recording experience, so im thinking of starting out with a 4 track cassette recorder. I found one on ebay for a good price, and i was wondering if anyone could tell me if this is any good for my very first recorder, thanks.

Vesta Fire

Man this thing is OLD OLD OLD and not very user friendly. Don't buy a Vesta Fire anything. Go for something newer. You can get Audacity for free and use your computer as a wave tracker. You can also get Jeskola Buzz For free (it's a modular synth and tracker and it's awesome. Big learning curve but it's worth it. You may need to buy some sort of input device for your guitar and/or vocals to get a professional sound quality but you can get some of those pretty cheap. Try http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ (don't let the warnings about "advanced users" scare you it's really quite simple if you play with it for awhile. And try http://buzzmachines.com. Make sure you read the help documentation thoroughly or you will get lost trying to use it. Just takes a little reading to figure it out. Line6 has some good input devices and I highly recommend them. Not super expensive but very cool sounds and very flexible. Or go to your local music store and ask around. :D Here is a playlist of some of the things I've been learning with Jeskola Buzz: http://strangeandcool.net/2009/07/11/recent-songs-added-to-my-playlist-listen-here/ . Make sure you listen with headphones or a high quality stereo amp. It sounds like crap on laptop speakers and those cheapo desktop speakers that usually come with most computers.
