if i record on a crappy 4 track with a sm58 it sounds like im talking on the phone. i sound like a complete retard when i talk on the phone... kinda like a daffy duck with a cold. if i record in a major studio will it sound like me real voice. i know i sing well with no mic but when i do mic it to my tascam 4 track it sounds like im talking on the phone.... whats the deal ...

Well it shouldn't sound like a phone unless something is not hooked up right.

If this is the first time you have recorded your voice it can be pretty surprising. What you think is your real voice is a combination of the vibrations in your skull and reflected sound in the room.

Sometimes reality is a bitch.

Yep, sorry dude, but that's what your voice really sounds like to everyone else. Looks like it's time for a new hobby...:(

. . .and sometimes the bitch can't sing.

(let's hope that's not the case here)

Good luck!

Manmademusic..................

Maybe you should just stick to writing music, instead of singing music.

A simple solution.

Why not just ask a few of your friends to compare you live with you recorded?

I'd say remove the 58 & 4-Track from the equation for a moment and record just yourself singing ( NOT singing along to something, just you ) in a room with a boombox.

If it sounds a bit more like "you", then consider better mic and recording technique.

IF you still hate what you hear don't give up yet 'cus MAYBE even if YOU don't like the way it sounds it still MAY be a fact that you can indeed sing.
At that point you may wish to ask a few friends or someone not affraid to hurt your feelings for an opinion or perhaps try karoke somewhere and see if people seem angry or pleased...
You can even post an example in the 'Mp3 mixing clinic' with an explaination of what you're going through and maybe someone can point you in the right direction.

"Major studios" (As you put it) can and do preform some "Magic", but it's 98% in terms of adding the icing to the cake...
Either you've got cake walking through the door or you don't.

Don't give up
:)

lol vibrations in your head LOL....i love that one....i wonder how some of these screaming indie bands can sleep at night knowing how they sound on recordings.......make sure you pronunciate the words.....the brain kinda focuses more on that and it helps your voice a bit. and try using a condensor mic......that helps on the side of equipment
