very new to this recording

i have a fairly decent computer and i want to get into digital recording. with the style of music i like it is very hard to purchase and most of this style (urban house) is digital. my problem is there is so much equipment to look at i don't know where to start. so i purchase a pr of alesis monitor one speakers. where do i go next, without spending my retirement money?

For software, look into stuff like Sonic Foundry Acid if you want to work with loops, and check out n-track for a downloadable multitracker.

You'll also need a monitor amp to feed those Alesises. What instruments are you planning on recording and how many tracks do you need to record at once?
