first off i was thinking of selling my vamp and just getting an amp simulator plug in, do you guys have any input on these, are they as good or even better than a vamp for tone? Also can the vamp be used as a "head" with a cabinet, or would i only be able to use my vamp with a half stack by plugging it into the head (meaning is the vamp just Preamp sounds or an amp in itself)

Plugs don't work all that well for playing live. Even the fastest computers will have a slight (sometimes very slight) delay between when you hit the string and the sound hits the speakers. Besides, do you want to haul around your computer in order to jam with someone?! Most people aren't at that point, yet. :)

The VAmp is a preamp and doesn't have the power to drive the speakers so, no, you can't use it as an amp head. There *are* modeling amp heads, but I don't think that's what you have- you'd know: they look, feel, and *are* amp heads so you wouldn't need to ask.

Think of the VAmp as a killer effects pedal and you'll know exactly how to use it.

Plugs are more for recording than playing live. Depending on which plug you have it might blow away the VAmp, but probably not.

recently i upgraded from the v-amp to a podxt, best decision i ever made. The v-amp was good for a month or so, but then you really begin to realize it really sucks.why not go with the industry standard podxt

Our band recorded at a Pro Studio and the guy miked a cab which had a really nice Framous head and got a great distortion guitar tone out it. I took the recording home when it was done and tried to emulate the sound we got with my V-Amp, I pretty much got the exact tone and that chunky sound we were getting in the studio, I just had to tweek it alittle.
When we were tracking the drums in the studio they guy had us play out of a POD, so the drummer knew where he was in the song. The POD sounded fine but not incredibly better or different than the V-Amp, I'd say there a pretty close match as long as you know how to use them.
