When having your artists record hip hop verses do you have them record the same verse a bunch of times and then construct a "final" verse by selecting the parts you like from each take...

Or...

Wait till they nail a take perfectly and just use that whole take?

If you do combine a bunch of takes into one, are there any tricks for making it sound fluid? Sometimes when i combine a bunch of takes they dont sound
"fluid" or together. I compress and EQ and it sounds better, but are their any tricks you guys use when combining vocal takes?

Thanks

I wrote out a full reply, and the site crashed on me... pure faggotry.

Damn

I want that reply...

Faggotry indeed.

Gimme the short version.

The rest of yall... the long version if you could ;)

Basically I said:

If an emcee isn't prepared to spit his verse the way it should be recorded, I kick them out of the booth. That means, they better have their stuff memorized, and ready to fire. There's only two people allowed to record in my studio while reading off of paper, and one of them is me.

In other words... make them do it until it's correct. I'd never paste or splice takes together to form a full verse. 9 times out of 10 I won't use a punch in either. Make em do it right.

Thanks guys.

I figured that that would be the general idea. Memorizing your lyrics before you spit it out def increases the quality of the takes.

Anyone else have other techniques?

An artist might spit a verse different ways each time he tries to record it.

If there was a situation where an artist nailed his verse 5 times in a row, wit slightlyl different delivery each time, would you guys try to complile the best parts from each performance or just pick the best verse of the 5 and just keep that entire performance?

I'd pick the best one, and roll with it. If you compile a verse from multiple takes, it will lack continuity.
