Does anyone know how to get a really good Van Halen guitar sound??

I think on the later VH stuff (ie hagar forward) he used a 2 channel wet/dry rig and blended the 2 setups to keep the distortion and maintain so brighter punch.

he's still hocking the VH peavy 5150 amp as well, never played one though.

i think i saw a rig diagram a few years ago in "guitar" mag. i think they changed names to "guitar one", you might be able to search some back issuses for there rig suggestions an settings (if you can afford that rig could your family please adopt me.)

Strat style guitar with a humbucker in the bridge position and a high gain amp! If you really want to sound like him buy a 5150 amp and a peavey Wolfgang guitar . My daughters old boyfriend , (who is a Van Halen fanatic and has all the licks down ) and I were in a music store one day and he played through this rig and it is sweet sounding !! Personally I'm more into my strat through my Deluxe Reverb RI.

My VF-1 has three patches for the VH sound. Really great sounding, 5150, 5150 Lead and OLD VH. Go check one out at a music store

Van Halen I was recorded (mostly) live with an old Plexi that had all the controls pretty much floored. In the early days I know that Edward favored the old MXR Flanger (the one with the AC cord coming out of it) and sometimes used two of them in line, one going slow and one going fast. I also think he was using variacs to get a spongier sound out of his amps.

I have this guitar player magazine and it says the eddy uses his EVH peavey, using the MXR flanger and phase. NO CHORUS!
He has this eventilde (or something like this) Harmonizer which is about 3000 US$ on guitar buyers guide!
In the earlydays everything went to a marshall plexi but this amp is too old and lost a lot of power (eddy said) so now he goes with the 5150.
Hw uses two shure SM57, one direct to the center of the amp, the other plased in angle... and so on...
