Vague Cubase question involving digital clicks.

Hey, this will be vague as i'm not the one encountering the problem. Basically our guitarist is running a version of Cubase with Windows 2000 on a dedicated PC. We did some multi-track recording of drums/guitars and so on which went really well, played back the results and were happy with what we were hearing. For some reason now (a couple of weeks post-recording) the tracks are covered in digital clicks, nothing has been changed and it has put the recording schedule back somewhat. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Any ideas what to do or change to sort it out?

Might be time to defrag the drive that the audio data is stored on.
Also be certain to end any unneeded processes/proggies while doing DAW work.

#1. Don't ever trust a guitarist with mixing tracks.
#2. First I ever heard of this. It could be he has overloaded the cpu with other programs running in the backround or too many plugins. Since you said nothing has changed though I doubt that.
#3. The software you used may have been a demo or pirated.

If the tracks themselves have the clicks on them then they're dust and you need to redo them. Have you done a buffer and sync test or checked the VST performance? Were all the tracks recorded with the same sample rate? What version of Cubase is he running, how much RAM is there and what's the processing speed? Sorry I have more questions than answers.

Open a few of the tracks in a wave editor and zoom way in on them to see if the clicks are actually in the recording itself ..... If not, then you are in luck. This means it is most likely a disk throughput issue.
First .... Defrag. and make sure DMA is enabled.
Secondly ... ensure that no other programs are trying to access the drive also (background programs).
Third ..... make sure buffer settings haven't been changed.

Lastly .... check for any updated drivers, or if drivers have been updated post recording session ... try rolling back to previous drivers.

First, listen carefully, do the clicks happen in the same place on the same track EVRY time? If not, then your tracks ar just fine. Check to make sure that the buffer settings are set properly. You say nothing has changed, but obviously something has. Now you just have to find out what and why. I would check buffer settings first, then check any digital clock settings. Make sure your monitoring device, and out puts and Cubase are all using the same clock and are set with only one master.
