Winner chicken dinner!
I want a VA that sounds like the sounds I get out of fruity loops 3.4. I have an Alesis Ion and a Juno 106. The Ion is too dull and the 106 is too natural sounding. I want something that sounds like fruity loops to complement these synths. I hate midi/softsynths. I like real keyboards because I play stuff live. I want something sharp, edgy, and digital sounding, that will come through the mix a little more than what I currently have. Suggestions?

midi controller hooked up to laptop running 3xosc in fruityloops. Surefire way.

Re-read my original post.

I have a suggestion. Learn something about synth programming before you start throwing money at your problem.

If the Ion is too dull, get a patch that's almost what you want and put an edge on it. And I have no idea what you mean by 'the 106 is too natural sounding'. That's the last thing I've heard the Juno/Jupiter series accused of being.

Read up here or buy a book here.

Thanks for posting that linke ssscientist. I wasn't sure where to begin looking for more detailed information on different patch attributes on my Micron, and even though that was just a simple Amazon search, I hadn't even thought of doing that. I ordered one of the books on the page that looked good, and hopefully it's as good as it looks. :)

The first link in my post will be something for you to read while the book is getting to you -- here it is again.

I have a suggestion too sssssssszzzzzzcientist, why don't actually ask me if i know anything about programming before making ignorant assumptions. Neither the Ion or the Juno 106 sound anything at all like the 3x Osc synth in fruity loops. I have extensively programmed both the ion and the juno. Do you even own either of these synths or have you ever used them? And have you used the fruity loops synth to compare???

There's a reason why there are thousands of different synths available, maybe it's because DIFFERENT SYNTHS SOUND DIFFERENT!?!??? Wow, what a concept!

By "natural" I pretty much meant a warm and slightly uncontrolled sound. Not as it in sounds like a specific acoustic instrument, but as in every time you hit a note it sounds very slightly different, just like when you play an acoustic instrument flute or a piano.....no matter how good the players are there's going to be some slight variation, even if you don't consciously recognize it. What I'm looking for is a digital synth that sounds less smooth and warm, and more harsh/abrupt ala the synth in fruity works.

Lastly, don't tell me how to spend my money! Or maybe you'll tell the chemical brothers, or some other big synth artist that they should get rid of all their synths and just keep one since they all sound the same. Sorry bro! Maybe next time you should take a minute to step out of the condescending, faux forum tough guy roleplay and actually ask questions or know what you're talking about before you speak

To the other guy: I used to own a Clavia Nord Lead 3 and it wasn't quite my cup of tea. It was almost what I was looking for- at least after programming past the presets, but still not quite there. I hear the Nord Lead 2 sounds way different though, never tried one out but from what people describe it might be just what I'm looking for- Like an NL3 but a little more digital sounding with more bite??

I've got a nord lead 2x and it sounds VERY digital, and has quite a bit of bite; which is exactly why i'm selling mine but it sounds like a good match for your needs (i'm a dirty analogue synth guy...) One thing is that all the factory-shipped presets suck, but the organ section is decent and programming your own sounds is both fruitful and easy to do.

Sincerely,
The Other Guy

Thanks man, I think I might try that out. My main problem with the Ion(Don't get me wrong, I still love it), is that it doesn't quite sound sound analog, but it doesn't really sound digital either. I want something really digital sounding so that the Ion can bridge the gap between the juno and the really digital sounding synth. I'm really into analog too, but i want a nice variety. I want a nice digital and a really nice analog with more programming possibilities than the Juno. I'm just going with digital right now cause it's cheaper and I'm saving up for some other recording gear. At some point I want to buy a Minimoog or some other awesome analog piece to complete my collection.

Yeah, I'd kill for a vintage minimoog d, but hey, i don't have a spare 3-4 grand lying around.

i suggest getting an older Access Virus cheap. Their sound is very edgy and digital. If you want something that can do both, a Waldorf might be the answer.

Oooh, baby! Seems like I touched a raw nerve!

I assumed you didn't know anything about synth programming because of the phrasing of your original post.

I have used the Ion's little brother (the Micron) and used to own a Juno 106 back in the day. In a way I wish I still had it, but the 6 voice thing meant it was always voice-robbing on big chords. And yes, I use FL all the time, including the 3x Osc synth.

You took my post the wrong way. I'm not trying to make you look foolish - and there are plenty of people here for whom that's a full time pursuit.

korg ms2000?

I don't usually use the 3OSC in FL so I hope i'm not barking up the wrong tree here, but i've got a Korg MS2000R (rack version) that I think fits the bill for "sharp, edgy, and digital sounding". With the filter wide open, it can be brittle, especially when you engage the distortion button (just on or off, though you can control some distortion amount by adjusting the level of the input). It's gotten good reviews from people who say it sounds "analog". I don't own any analog synths so i can't compare, but you may want to check it out. The rack version isn't too pricey, and there's lots of modulation potential, with a vocoder thrown in for good measure.

Also, I second the suggestion of a Virus. Small footprint, great filters and effects, enough knobs to keep you busy.

good luck,
marcus

Try a Q or MicroQ. Simillar to the early Access that Chriss already suggested , but with a little more digital "byte".

I just won a Nord Lead 2 rack off ebay. I hope it's what I'm looking for.....like an NL3 but with a little more bite.
