...yeah...very strange...$99 for the mic...$49 for the power supply...plus shipping...and you still have to supply a 7-pin cable and a power cord...but whassup with that tube?...I upgraded 3 V69M mics with NOS tubes, but the tube mount was definately different...
That thing looks like its got the tube soldered to the board. I know that's been the design with some mics, but I also know that wasn't the case with these mics, and it also makes life a lot more difficult if you want to upgrade, or if the thing ever breaks.
I know they don't break *that* often, but that would be akin to buying a car that you can't change the tires on... they'll work for a while, but they do give eventually
...the MXL V77s were also solder-mounted tubes...a bitch to convert, but worth the trouble...but a V69...they're $200 (used) with the complete package, so no deal there...
You're right, I've had one of these and after a year the tube was making funny noises. They sent me a new one for free and that one had the newer tube in a tube socket.
But the Neumann M149 has a mini tube soldered to a small PCB as well, no sweat.
There's a thread about this over on that other board and it appears the v69 in question was a very short run that had a bunch of problems. The guy over there contacted mxl and they gave him several options.
